Red Dragons Tie Conference Record in 200 Freestyle Relay at Day 1 of SUNYAC Women's Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland set school, meet and conference records in the 200-yard freestyle relay and sophomore Sarah Culmo (West Islip) won the 50-yard freestyle in a school record-setting time during the first full day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Red Dragons currently sit in third place out of nine schools in the team standings with two days remaining. Fredonia leads with 235 points, followed by Geneseo (214), Cortland (193.5) and New Paltz (147.5) in the top four. The championship is being held at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College.

The combination of junior Jessica Evans (Hamburg), senior Michelle Seeger (Oneonta), sophomore M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Culmo won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:35.79. That effort is a school record and an NCAA “B” cut, and ties the SUNYAC conference and meet record set by Geneseo in 2009. The previous school mark was 1:37.56 by Katie Molzan, Allie Houseman, Kristin Barnoski and Nikki LaBarge in 2007.

Following the night's competition, Cortland swam the race again as a “time trial” and was clocked at 1:35.42. While that time can be used for NCAA qualification purposes, it can not be used to break a conference record, per the SUNYAC Handbook.

Culmo won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.84 seconds. The time is an NCAA “B” cut and breaks the previous school record of 24.03 seconds set by Barnoski in 2010.

Sophomore Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) established a new school record with her third-place time of 2:10.91 in the 200-yard individual medley. LaBarge was the previous record holder with an effort of 2:11.48 in 2006.

Evans placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.22) and freshman Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.79). The 400-yard medley relay of junior Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North), freshman Michaela Auer (Oswego), Hickey and sophomore Caitlin Lanigan (West Seneca/West Seneca West) finished third in 4:00.11.

Senior Sara Wynne (Wantagh), in only her second year as a competitive diver, finished sixth on the three-meter board with 398.20 points. Dugue finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (25.00, 24.69 in prelims), while Seeger won the 50-yard freestyle “B” final in 24.82 seconds after just missing qualifying for the “A” final.

Other Red Dragons scorers included sophomore Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) with a 10th-place score of 368.60 points in three-meter diving, Auer with an 11th-place time of 25.16 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, senior Laura Bohneberg (Lockport) with a 12th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.14) and junior Kelsey Roe (Auburn) with a tie for 15th place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.72).
