Bonnell Earns Two of Red Dragons' Six Victories at Cortland Classic

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won five individual events and one relay, led by two victories from sophomore Sarah Bonnell (Norwich), as the Red Dragons hosted the Cortland Women's Outdoor Track and Field Classic Friday and Saturday.

Bonnell won the 100-meter dash in 12.78 seconds (12.23 in prelims) and the 200-meter dash in 26.34 seconds, hitting ECAC qualifying standards in both events. She's currently 12th on the national Division III qualifier list in the 100-meter dash. Senior Abby Vander Veen (Duanesburg/Faith Bible Academy) captured the 400-meter dash in an ECAC time of 59.61 seconds and freshman Erica Wharton (Putnam Valley) hit an ECAC mark with her winning long jump of 5.20 meters (17' 0.75”).

Junior Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North) won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.19, and the 4x400-meter relay of senior Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland), junior Alexis Grable (Pine Bush), freshman Kiki Jones (Binghamton) and Vander Veen finished first with an ECAC qualifying time of 3:54.86. The Red Dragons also finished third in that relay as sophomore Trisha Clark (Pulaski), Triantafillou, freshman Kiersten Duroe (Horseheads) and junior Liz Henry (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) posted an ECAC time of 4:03.36.

Sophomore Lexi Budd (Riverhead) finished second in the high jump by clearing an ECAC-qualifying height of 1.64 meters (5' 4.5”). Junior Brittany Krivicich (Middletown/Pine Bush) finished fourth at 1.48 meters (4' 10.25”).

Freshman Taylor Hudson (Victor) finished second in the heptathlon with 4,444 points, followed by junior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) in third place with 4,148 points. Hudson's score is currently ranked fifth and Schafer's score is ranked 17th nationally in Division III. Hudson hit ECAC standards in four of the heptathlon's seven events. She was first in the 200-meter dash (25.90), high jump (1.62 meters – 5' 3.75”) and long jump (5.36 meters – 17' 7”), and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.85). Schafer was third in the 100-meter hurdles with an ECAC time of 15.74 seconds.

Also reaching ECAC standards were junior Jess Andrianos (Syracuse/West Genesee) and freshman Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) in the discus, sophomore Kelly Hugo (Highland) in the pole vault, freshman Bori Tozser (Homer) in the 1,500 meters  and senior Jenna Evarts (West Islip) in the 100-meter dash.

Andrianos was fourth in the discus with a distance of 37.71 meters (123' 9”), with Vancol sixth at 36.60 meters (120' 1”). Hugo finished sixth in the pole vault at 3.37 meters (11' 0.75”) and Tozser was third in the 1,500 meters in 4:46.83. Evarts recorded a time of 12.42 seconds in the 100-meter dash prelims but did not compete in the finals.

Cortland earned six of the top seven spots in the field of 26 sprinters in the 200-meter dash. In addition to Bonnell's victory, Montrose placed second (26.85), Jones third (27.08), freshman Hannah Anthes (Liverpool) fourth (27.28), Grable fifth (27.39) and Clark seventh (27.79). In the 100-meter dash, Anthes finished second (13.39, 12.95 prelims) behind Bonnell and Wharton was third (13.75, 12.94 prelims), while in the 400-meter dash Montrose finished third (1:00.68), Clark was fourth (1:01.05) and Jones placed sixth (1:01.87) in addition to Vander Veen's victory.

Wharton was one of five Red Dragons in the top eight in the long jump with her victory. Junior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished third at 5.16 meters (16' 11.25”). Junior Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) and junior Gina Campagna (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) each registered a top jump of 4.93 meters (16' 2.25”). Officially, Hotchkiss placed sixth and Campagna seventh. Senior Brenna Filipello (Selkirk/Bethlehem) was eighth at 4.74 meters (15' 6.75”).

Hotchkiss finished third in the triple jump (9.98 meters – 32' 9”). Junior Chelsea Lachman (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) placed fourth in the shot put (10.99 meters – 36' 0.75”) and was seventh in both the discus (35.99 meters – 118' 1”) and the javelin (24.36 meters – 79' 11”).

Henry finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.54) and sophomore Becca Bundick (Washingtonville) finished seventh (1:12.92). Freshman Brittany Lamie (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) crossed the finish line third in the 10,000 meters (43:17.76) and senior Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) was seventh in the 1,500 meters (4:56.30).

Sophomore Colleen Fischman (Orchard Park/Hamburg) and sophomore Dayna Eikeseth (Staten Island/Tottenville) placed fifth (18:49.97) and eighth (19:42.90), respectively, in the 5,000 meters. Other top Cortland performances included junior Karli Johnson (Mount Sinai) with a fifth-place hammer throw of 42.00 meters (137' 9”) and sophomore Lisa Bodratti (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) with a sixth-place 100-meter hurdles time of 17.04 seconds (16.56 in prelims).
