Stephens Ties School Triple Jump Record, One of Many ECAC Qualifiers at Cornell Meet

Karli Johnson placed in the top eight in both the hammer throw and discus
ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) tied an 18-year-old school record in the triple jump to highlight Cortland's performances at the Cornell Big Red Women's Outdoor Track and Field Invitational. She finished fourth overall, and was the top Div. III finisher, with her distance of 11.54 meters (37' 10.5”) to tie the school mark set by Jennifer Sponenberg in 1994.

Stephens was one of Cortland's numerous ECAC Championship qualifiers at the meet. Sophomore Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) finished second in the long jump out of 35 competitors, losing only to a Cornell competitor, with a distance of 5.60 meters (18' 4.5”) and was eighth of 43 in the 200-meter dash in 25.63 seconds. In the long jump, freshman Taylor Hudson (Victor) placed sixth at 5.47 meters (17' 11.5”) and junior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) was eighth at 5.35 meters (17' 6.75”), both ECAC marks.

Freshman Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) finished fourth in the shot put with an ECAC distance of 11.70 meters (38' 4.75”) and junior Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North) was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with an ECAC time of 1:05.28.

Also meeting ECAC standards were sophomore Kelly Hugo (Highland) in the pole vault (ninth place, 3.25 meters – 10' 8”), senior Jenna Evarts (West Islip) in the 200-meter dash (16th place, 26.27), senior Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland) in the 100-meter dash (13th place, 12.78) and senior Brenna Filipello (Selkirk/Bethlehem) in the 100-meter hurdles (20th place, 16.05).

Other highlights included a second-place finish by junior Alexis Grable (Pine Bush) in the 400-meter dash (1:00.79) and junior Karli Johnson (Mount Sinai) finishing sixth in the hammer (40.81 meters – 133' 11”) and eighth in the discus (35.63 meters – 116' 11”).

Junior Chelsea Lachman (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) placed seventh in the discus (36.24 meters – 118' 11”) and Schafer finished ninth in the javelin (29.24 meters – 95' 11”). Sophomore Lexi Budd (Riverhead) and Hudson each cleared 1.55 meters (5' 1”) in the high jump. Based on misses, Budd finished seventh and Hudson 10th.
