Kohler's "Grand" Performance Helps Red Dragons Take Two at Buffalo State

Meaghan Kohler hit a grand slam and drove in five runs in each game of the doubleheader and leads Cortland this spring with eight homers and 42 RBI
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore outfielder Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) hit a grand slam and drove in five runs in each game as nationally 14th-ranked Cortland swept a doubleheader at Buffalo State, 12-1 and 15-7. Both games were called after six innings due to the eight-run rule. Kohler finished the doubleheader a combined 5-for-9 with two grand slams, 10 RBI and three runs scored as the Red Dragons (22-4, 8-0 SUNYAC) extended their SUNYAC regular-season unbeaten streak to 49 games (48-0-1) dating back to the 2009 season.

GAME 1: Cortland 12, Buffalo St. 4 (6 inn.) (Box Score)

Kohler was 3-for-4 with a homer and double as part of Cortland's 14-hit attack in the opening victory. Junior Kayla Lynch (Albany/Colonie) went 2-for-4 with a homer, double and four RBI and junior Tara Donnino (East Northport/Northport) finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

In addition, senior Lorraine Stoddard (Liverpool) was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI and junior Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) ended 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior Lyndsay Rowell (Sandy Creek) earned the victory. Now 9-3, Rowell gave up six hits, a walk and four runs in four innings with two strikeouts. Senior Morgan Kuhn (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) did not allow any runs over the final two innings. She gave up two hits and a walk and fanned two.

For Buffalo State, Aleesha Williams went 2-for-2 with a walk, Brieanna Brink was 2-for-3 and Kyristin Lekki finished 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Kohler's RBI single gave Cortland a 1-0 lead in the first. In the third, the Red Dragons loaded the bases on a Donnino single, a Meola hit-by-pitch and a Stoddard single. A fielder's choice on the next batter resulted in a force at home, but Kohler responded with a homer to clear the bases and put Cortland ahead 5-0.

The Bengals scored three in the third on Lekki's two-run single and a Sam Strapason RBI single. Cortland, however, notched two runs in the fourth on an Abby Martin (Oswego) two-run single and four in the fifth on Lynch's three-run homer and Stoddard's RBI single.

Trailing 11-3, Buffalo State briefly staved off the eight-run run with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Shelly Maggard doubled, went to third on a Lindsay Goff single and scored on a Lekki fielder's choice. Lynch doubled in a run to put Cortland ahead 12-4 in the top of the sixth and Kuhn struck out two batters while allowing one hit in a scoreless sixth to end the game.

GAME 2: Cortland 15, Buffalo St. 7 (6 inn.) (Box Score)

Cortland let leads of 5-1 and 7-5 slip away, but exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to gain control. Kohler's second grand slam of the day capped the sixth-inning fireworks and she finished 2-for-5 with two runs and five RBI. Kohler leads the Red Dragons this spring with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 26 games.

Martin went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, walk and two RBI. Junior Cassie Kardias (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) was 2-for-4 with a walk, Stoddard was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs and senior Jessica Harman (Penfield) finished 2-for-4 with two runs.

Kuhn entered the game to start the fifth inning and earned the win in the circle. She gave up two hits and two runs, walked one and struck out three. Martin pitched three innings prior to Kuhn's entry and gave up three hits and four runs, all unearned. She struck out two and walked two.

Goff and Lekki each went 2-for-3 to lead the Bengals (11-9, 4-4 SUNYAC). Goff finished with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs and Lekki had a double, walk and two runs.

Cortland batted around in the top of the first on its way to a 4-0 lead. After Meola walked and Stoddard doubled, Martin drove in a run with a groundout. Kohler then singled home a run. Four batters later, freshman Devynn Wilder (Oswego) hit a two-run single down the left field line.

The Bengals scored in the first on a Strapason RBI single, but Cortland got that run back in the third with the help of two errors. The hosts tallied two unearned runs in the third and two more in the fourth and tied the game at 5-5.

Cortland regained the lead at 7-5 on a Meola two-run double in the fifth, but Buffalo State knotted the game again when Goff hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the frame.

Cortland's eight-run sixth started with consecutive singles by Kardias, Harman and Lynch, the last of which drove in a run. Wilder's sacrifice bunt loaded the bases when a throw to third was not in time. Junior Nicole Gallo (Mount Sinai) hit an RBI single to right to put Cortland up 9-7 and, one out later, Stoddard was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Martin then walked to drive in a run and Kohler unloaded her second bases-loaded roundtripper of the day, and her fourth homer in the last three games, to push the lead to 15-7. Kuhn easily retired the side in the bottom of the sixth.

Cortland will host Rochester on Wednesday, April 11, at 3 p.m. in a non-league doubleheader.
