Hudson and Schafer Top Heptathletes at Cornell Spring Meet

ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Taylor Hudson (Victor) and junior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) earned the top two spots in the heptathlon and freshman Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) qualified for the ECAC Div. III Championships in the discus to highlight Cortland's performances at the Cornell Spring Invitational.

Hudson won the heptathlon with a score of 4,337 points. During the competition, she reached ECAC qualifying standards in the 100-meter hurdles (16.08) and high jump (1.60 meters – 5' 3”). Schafer finished second overall with 4,146 points. She had the top time in the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying 15.52 seconds and had the best javelin throw at 28.67 meters (94' 1”), which was not an ECAC qualifier.

Vancol finished fifth in the discus with her ECAC distance of 39.78 meters (130' 6”). She was also fifth in the shot put at 11.17 meters (36' 7.75”). Sophomore Kelly Hugo (Highland) tied for fifth in the pole vault (2.95 meters – 9' 8”) and was 10th of 29 in the long jump at 5.27 meters (17' 3.5”).

Junior Karli Johnson (Mount Sinai) finished seventh in the hammer throw (39.70 meters – 130' 3”) and ninth in the discus (33.09 meters – 108' 7”). Junior Jess Andrianos (Syracuse/West Genesee) earned an eighth-place finish in the discus (35.73 meters – 117' 3”).

Sophomore Colleen Fischman (Orchard Park/Hamburg) placed 12th of 29 in the 1,500 meters (5:08.63), with junior Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) close behind in 14th place (5:09.66). In the 400-meter dash, freshman Kiersten Duroe (Horseheads) finished 15th (1:04.36) and freshman Ashley Martin (Groton) was 16th (1:04.54) in a field of 37 competitors.
