SUNY Cortland senior men's lacrosse attackman
Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) has been selected to the 2012 Capital One Division III Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team.
The team is chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The men's at-large team covers 12 sports. Tota was also named to the District 3 academic all-district first team. Under a new structure this year, NCAA Division III schools are no longer combined with other divisions for CoSIDA academic awards. In Division III, District 3 encompasses all schools in New York State.
Tota is a national Academic All-American for the second straight year. He earned second-team national College Division honors as a junior in 2011.
A business economics major, Tota entered the spring semester with a 4.09 overall grade point average. A three-time All-American on the field, Tota led Cortland with 46 goals and ranked second with 31 assists for a team-high 77 points this spring. He graduates as Cortland's career leader with 174 goals scored and second with 247 total points (174 goals, 73 assists).
Cortland finished the season 21-1 to set a school record for wins in a season. The Red Dragons advanced to the NCAA Div. III Championship Game before losing to Salisbury, 14-10, in a matchup of unbeaten teams. Cortland has played in the national finals five times in the last seven years (2006-09, 2012) and has made 12 straight NCAA tournament appearances. Cortland won the NCAA Div. III title during Tota's freshman season in 2009.
