#9 Red Dragons Cruise to Three-Set Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's volleyball team remained unbeaten on the season with a three-set, non-league win over visiting Brockport. The Red Dragons (9-0), who are enjoying their highest national ranking since the 1999 season, defeated the Golden Eagles, 25-11, 25-14, 25-14.

Senior Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) led a balanced Cortland offensive attack with seven kills and also finished with seven digs and two aces. Junior Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) finished with six kills and no errors in 10 attempts for a .600 attack percentage. Junior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) and freshman Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) each recorded the same attack stats of five kills and one error in 11 attempts., with Givelechian also totaling eight digs.

Junior libero Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) led the Red Dragons with 12 digs and three aces. Senior Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) rang up 30 assists and five digs and sophomore Mary Kelly (Guilderland) registered a team-best three blocks.

Cortland posted at least a .300 attack percentage in each set and finished the night hitting at a .329 clip (35 kills, nine errors in 79 attempts).

Sophomore Jaime Snyder (Elmira/Thomas Edison) led Brockport (4-6) with a match-high 10 kills. Senior Sarah Zelko (Elmira/Horseheads) finished with 14 assists and junior Hannalee Fordyce (Amityville/Copiague) had seven digs.

Cortland raced out to an 11-2 lead in the opening set and was never threatened. The Red Dragons had a similar quick start to the second set with leads of 7-1 and 19-8. Brockport stayed close early in the third set at 4-4, but Cortland responded with five straight points, including two Givelechian kills, to take a 9-4 lead. Brockport cut a 20-10 deficit to 20-13 later in the set, but Cortland won five of the last six points to end the match.

Cortland will travel to the Union College Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Red Dragons will face Skidmore and Hartwick Friday night and Union and Utica on Saturday.
