Cortland Improves to 17-0 With SUNYAC East Sweeps of Potsdam and Plattsburgh

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland, ranked ninth nationally, improved its record to 17-0 with three-set wins over Potsdam and Plattsburgh during Day 2 of the SUNYAC East pool play at Corey Gymnasium.

The Red Dragons, now 4-0 in the conference, beat Potsdam, 25-13, 25-13, 25-21, and knocked off Plattsburgh, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23). New Paltz finished the weekend 3-1, Potsdam was 2-2, Oneonta went 1-3 and Plattsburgh was 0-4. Another pool play will be held Oct. 19-20 at New Paltz, and the top three teams will join the top three schools from the West division in the SUNYAC tournament Nov. 2-4 at the West champion.

Junior Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) led Cortland versus Potsdam with 11 kills, five blocks and six digs. Senior Natalie Zacpal (Islip) finished with nine kills and four blocks and senior Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) had seven kills, 14 digs and two aces. Senior Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) tallied 32 assists and eight digs and freshman Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) added five kills, seven digs and three blocks.

Zacpal put down a team-high 10 kills and added three blocks in the win over Plattsburgh. Coyle and junior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) finished with nine kills and two blocks apiece. Coyle also totaled 10 digs. Guercio ended with 34 assists, five aces and five digs and junior Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) led the team with 14 digs.

Cortland will play a dual match at Clarkson University on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m.
