BETHLEHEM, PA. – The SUNY Cortland men's cross country team, ranked 14th nationally in Div. III, finished in fifth place out of 33 schools and was the top Div. III finisher in the Brown Division of the Lehigh University Paul Short Run.
The University of Pennsylvania won the race with 47 points, followed by Canisius (167), Stony Brook (182), East Stroudsburg (186) and Cortland (191) in the top five. Among those that the Red Dragons defeated were Division I schools Monmouth, Pittsburgh, Vermont, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, South Florida, Manhattan, Loyola (Md.) and Niagara.
Sophomore
Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) placed 14th out of 283 runners in 25:40 over 8,000 meters. He improved by 16 places and 37 seconds from his performance at last year's race.
Senior
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) recorded a 21st-place time of 25:55, a minute better than last year, and sophomore
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished 39th in 26:15, just over a minute better than last season.
Senior
Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) finished in 52nd place in 26:25 and junior
Ryan Perry (Buffalo/Williamsville North) was 66th in 26:31. Blazey improved his time by a minute and 14 seconds from 2011. Junior
Tim Lee (West Babylon) crossed the line 69th (26:35) and junior
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) placed 80th (26:40).
Cortland also had a number of runners compete in the 8,000-meter collegiate open race. The top Red Dragon was sophomore
Joe Ray (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) in 141st place of 394 runners in 27:20.
Cortland will next compete at the St. Lawrence University Hoffman Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6.
