Red Dragon Men Third at RPI Kumpf Invitational

Mark Schoenherr finished fourth in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle and led off the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team
TROY, N.Y. – Seniors Dan Maximowicz (Chenango Forks) and Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsbur) each won individual events as Cortland finished third out of eight teams at the RPI Kumpf Men's Swimming and Diving Invitational. Ithaca won the meet with 605 points, followed by RPI with 473, Cortland with 425 and Oneonta with 373. Rounding out the field were Skidmore (155), Clarkson (151), Vassar (92) and Cobleskill (12).

The competition was also scored as dual meets between each of the schools. Cortland finished 6-1, with its only loss coming versus Ithaca. The Red Dragons improved to 8-4 on the season.

Maximowicz won the 100-yard freestyle in 48.58 seconds and also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.97 seconds. Nelson won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:57.24.

Nelson, senior Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), freshman Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) and Maximowicz teamed to finish second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:37.25), while freshman Mark Schoenherr (New Rochelle/Iona Prep), junior Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain), senior Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) and freshman Reeve Callen (Oswego) placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:16.91).

Freshman Andrew Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) was the runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.09) and finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.15). Callen finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:14.99) and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.91). Senior Judd Simon (Oneida) placed third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.81) and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.53).

Schoenherr turned in fourth-place efforts in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.39) and 100-yard freestyle (50.13). Hanifin was fifth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:26.48), junior Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.51) and MacQuarrie finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.80).

Cortland earned two top-five finishes in each relay. In addition to the pair of second-place finishes, the combination of Hasbrouck, Strothenke, Cremer and Simon finished third in the 400-yard freestyle (3:16.96) and the quartet of Strickland, freshman Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), junior Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) and Strothenke finished fifth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:45.27).
