Three Individual Double-Winners Help Cortland Defeat New Paltz, 162-91

Justin Nelson set a pool record in the 200-yard backstroke and also won the 100-yard backstroke
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Three Red Dragons posted two individual victories apiece as Cortland improved to 9-5 on the season with a 162-91 dual-meet win at New Paltz.

Senior Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 100-yard backstroke (55.68) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.21). His 200-yard breaststroke time broke the previous pool record of 1:58.22 set by New Paltz's Lou Petto in 1992. Freshman Andrew Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport/Blue Point) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:15.23) and 500-yard freestyle (4:51.39), while freshman Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) captured the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.58) and 100-yard butterfly (53.14).

Freshman Mark Schoenherr (New Rochelle/Iona Prep) won the 50-yard freestyle (22.07) and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.86). Freshman Reeve Callen (Oswego) was the 200-yard freestyle winner in 1:47.71 and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.70).

Senior Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) was the 100-yard breaststroke winner (1:01.68) and senior Dan Maximowicz (Chenango Forks) won the 100-yard freestyle (49.91). Senior Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) recorded the fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.93) as an exhibition entry. He also finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.11).

Cortland opened the meet with a win by Strickland, MacQuarrie, Hasbrouck and Maximowicz in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.15). In the final race, Maximowicz, junior Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain), Schoenherr and Callen finished with the fastest time (3:15.97) as an exhibition entry.

In addition, junior Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) recorded second-place finishes in both the 100-yard backstroke (56.17) and 100-yard freestyle (50.22), while the 400-yard freestyle team of junior Matt Latorre (Bethlehem), Strothenke, sophomore Antrico Forbes (Brooklyn/Ralph R. McKee) and freshman Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) had the second-best time as an exhibition entry (3:26.47).

Cortland returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Oswego at 4 p.m.
