ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) and sophomore
Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each won events as the Cortland men's indoor track and field team finished fifth at the Cornell University Upstate Challenge.
The Red Dragons finished with 38 points. Four Division I schools – Cornell, Buffalo, Binghamton and Syracuse – earned the top four spots, followed by Cortland, Colgate and Ithaca.
Amengual won the 800-meter run in 1:58.42, senior
Pat Fannon (West Islip) placed second (1:59.87) and sophomore
Tim Odin (Northport) finished fourth (2:00.97). Ten Eyck won the pole vault with a height of 4.70 meters (15' 5”), an ECAC Div. III Championship qualifier. Senior
Eric Banks (Westbury) also qualified for ECACs with his 11th-place time of 1:07.72 in the 500-meter dash.
Freshman
Jerel Williams (East Islip) finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (51.84) and junior
Bryan Smith (Tully) posted a sixth-place score of 3,602 points in the heptathlon. Junior
Melique Garcia (Watervliet) finished seventh in the 200-meter dash (23.34) and 12th in the 60-meter dash (7.18), while senior
Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) placed seventh in the shot put (13.81 meters – 45' 3.75”).
Senior
Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) finished eighth in the weight throw (14.35 meters – 47' 1”) and senior
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) was ninth in the mile (4:29.43). Sophomore
Zach Zieniewicz (Seaford) finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.92) and freshman
Andre Green (Philadelphia/Indian River) ended ninth in the long jump (6.55 meters – 21' 6”).
In addition, the 4x400-meter relay team of Banks, Amengual, freshman
Julio Melendez (Valley Cottage/Nyack) and senior
Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) finished sixth in 3:30.99.
Cortland will host its annual Winter Invitational next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Lusk Field House. The Red Dragons will also send some competitors Saturday to the Colgate Class of '32 Invitational.
