Cortland Women Third at RPI Invitational

Freshman Katie Cornetta finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and was part of the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay
TROY, N.Y. – Three Red Dragons won events as Cortland finished third out of six teams at the RPI Women's Swimming and Diving Invitational. Oneonta won the meet with 399 points, followed by RPI (325), Cortland (306.5), Skidmore (215), William Smith (143.5) and Cobleskill (2).

The competition was also scored as dual meets between each of the schools. Cortland finished 4-1, with its only loss coming versus Oneonta, and is now 7-5 on the year.

Senior Jessica Evans (Hamburg) finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (55.60) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.20) and junior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) won the 50-yard freestyle (25.09) in addition to a fifth-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.91). Freshman Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) was the 1-meter diving winner (250.80 points) and finished fifth on the 3-meter board (214.50 points).

Freshman Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) was the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:22.97) and junior Emilee Gottlieb (Maine/Maine-Endwell) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.20). Sophomore Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) was third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.97) and sophomore Michaela Auer (Oswego) finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:41.10).

Cortland earned two top-five finishes in both relays. The quartet of senior Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North), Auer, Evans and Culmo finished second in the 400-yard medley relay (4:16.74), followed in fourth place by senior Kelsey Roe (Auburn), Gottlieb, junior Francesca Davide (Ossining) and freshman Chelsey Simon (Oneida). In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Simon, Caputo, Cornetta and MacDonald finished third (3:52.55) and senior Katherine Harris (Long Beach), freshman Brianne Munch (East Lyme, CT), sophomore Ashley Sherard (Valley Stream) and Roe placed fifth (3:58.33).

Cortland will compete in a dual meet at Oswego Wednesday at 4 p.m.
