Cortland Women Compete at Cornell Upstate Challenge

Alexandra Budd finished fifth in the high jump with an ECAC-qualifying height of 5' 3"
ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Taylor Hudson (Victor) won the pentathlon and junior Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) finished in the top five in two events for Cortland at the Cornell Upstate Challenge women's indoor track and field meet.

The Red Dragons finished in sixth place behind five Division I schools – Cornell, Buffalo, Binghamton, Syracuse and Colgate.

Hudson's pentathlon score of 3,024 points currently ranks second on the NCAA Div. III qualifying chart. Her high jump of 1.65 meters (5' 5”) in the pentathlon is tied for fifth nationally and is an ECAC Div. III Championship qualifier, while her long jump of 5.30 meters (17' 4.75”) is also an ECAC qualifier.

Bonnell finished third in the long jump at 5.68 meters (18' 7.75”), which is ranked second nationally and is an ECAC qualifier. She also posted an ECAC qualifying effort in the 200-meter dash with her fifth-place time of 25.85 seconds.

Junior Alexandra Budd (Riverhead),  junior Kelly Hugo (Highland) and senior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) also recorded ECAC qualifying performances. Budd finished fifth in the high jump at 1.60 meters (5' 3”) and Hugo tied for 10th in the pole vault at 3.30 meters (10' 10”). Schafer's fifth-place pentathlon score of 2,693 points featured an ECAC long-jump distance of 5.20 meters (17' 0.75”).

Senior Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) and freshman Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) finished fifth (2:23.26) and eighth (2:26.69), respectively, in the 800 meters. Freshman Kayla Koelbel (Bradford, PA/Kings Park (NY)) placed sixth in the heptathlon (2,684 points).

In the 400-meter dash, senior Alexis Grable (Pine Bush) finished seventh (1:01.21) and senior Abby Vander Veen (Duanesburg/Faith Bible Academy) was ninth (1:02.63). Freshman Carla Auguste (Brooklyn/Midwood) finished ninth in the triple jump (10.50 meters – 34' 5.5”) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Grable, Balzano, senior Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North) and sophomore Gabrielle Conant (Tully) finished eighth (4:12.75).

Cortland will host its annual Winter Invitational next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Lusk Field House. The Red Dragons will also send some competitors Saturday to the Colgate Class of '32 Invitational.
