Final Relay Decisive as Cortland Women Fall to Rochester, 156-144

Chrisanna Hickey won both the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Rochester's victory in the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, clinched the Yellowjackets' 156-144 dual-meet win over host Cortland at Holsten Pool. Rochester improved to 8-3 with the win. Cortland is now 8-6.

Rochester led 143-142 entering the final relay and won the race by 0.47 seconds in what proved to be a winner-take-all situation.

Cortland junior Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.46) and 400-yard individual medley (4:55.11), while freshman Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) won both 1-meter diving (242.95 pts.) and 3-meter diving (267.70 pts.).

Sophomore Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06.35) and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.27). Sophomore Michaela Auer (Oswego) was the 100-yard breaststroke winner (1:10.97). Cortland also won the opening 200-yard medley relay as senior Katherine Harris (Long Beach), Auer, Hickey and junior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) finished in 1:52.46.

Culmo posted runner-up finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (25.09) and 100-yard freestyle (54.74) and senior Jessica Evans (Hamburg) was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.90) and 100-yard butterfly (1:03.02). Evans, Caputo, freshman Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) and Culmo formed the 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed second in 3:40.48.

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Chelsey Simon (Oneida) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:17.40), senior Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.63), sophomore Ashley Sherard (Valley Stream) was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.27) and junior Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) was the 1-meter diving runner-up (222.70 pts.).

Cortland will compete at the Ithaca Diving Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2, and will host Fredonia State in a dual meet on Saturday, Feb. 9.
