Strong Distance Running Helps Cortland Men Finish Third at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Cortland finished in third place at the Colgate University Men's Indoor Track and Field Class of '32 Invitational. Despite having a good portion of its roster competing at its home winter invitational, the Red Dragons still managed to score 100 points at Colgate. Brockport won with 187 points, followed by Div. II Bloomsburg (117), Cortland and Div. I Colgate (88).

Cortland scored 31 of its points by sweeping the top six spots in the 3,000-meter run. Senior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) won the race with an ECAC Div. III Championship qualifying time of 8:43.85. Junior Ryan Perry (Buffalo/Williamsville North) finished second (8:55.95), followed by junior Tim Lee (West Babylon) (8:58.53), senior Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) (9:02.42), senior Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) (9:03.59) and junior Casey Austin (Pine Plains) (9:04.23).

Junior Cody Amengual (West Babylon) won the mile run with an ECAC time of 4:19.18, with senior Pat Fannon (West Islip) placing third (4:22.97). Senior Eric Banks (Westbury) also registered an ECAC time during his victory in the 400-meter dash (50.85). Junior Stephan Linton (Roosevelt) placed third (51.83) and senior Greenberg (Suffen) was sixth (53.26).

Four Red Dragons scored points with top-six finishes in the 200-meter dash. Banks won the event in 23.16 seconds, Linton finished third (23.26), sophomore Neil Yodice (East Northport/Northport) was fourth (23.49) and Greenberg finished sixth (24.19).

Freshman Julio Melendez (Valley Cottage/Nyack) turned in a second-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:00.07). Junior Mike Kelly (Coram/Longwood) also scored in the event with his fifth-place time of 2:02.69. The Red Dragons also had two sprinters score points in the 500-meter dash as sophomore Rob Schenke (Kings Park) placed fourth (1:10.38) and sophomore Eric Wong (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) finished sixth (1:10.74).

Cortland will compete at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3.
