Red Dragon Women Win Eight Events at Cortland Winter Invitational

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland posted eight victories – three with ECAC Div. III Championship qualifying performances – at the non-team scoring Cortland Women's Indoor Track and Field Winter Invitational at Lusk Field House.

Junior Emily Cotey (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) won the 3,000-meter run in an ECAC time of 10:44.69 and junior Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) covered an ECAC distance of 5.43 meters (17' 9.75”) with her winning long jump. Senior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) hit an ECAC mark in the triple jump with her first-place distance of 11.01 meters (36' 1.5”).

Sophomore Hannah Anthes (Liverpool) won the 60-meter dash in 8.31 seconds (8.30 in prelims) and junior Lisa Bodratti (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) captured top honors in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.82 seconds. Also victorious for the Red Dragons were junior Kelly Hugo (Highland) in the pole vault (3.25 meters – 10' 8”), sophomore Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) in the shot put (10.74 meters – 35' 3”), and the 4x400-meter relay team of Bonnell, Anthes, Bodratti and sophomore Kenya Outram (Brooklyn/Victory Collegiate) in 4:32.85.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Outram actually posted the top time in prelims at 9.69 seconds, but did not run in the finals. Sophomore Samantha Sagendorph (Bellmore/Bellmore JFK) finished third in the finals in 10.86 seconds. Sophomore Erica Wharton (Putnam Valley) finished second in the 60-meter dash in 8.42 seconds, with freshman Whitney Ford (Oswego) third in 8.55 seconds.

Bonnell led a sweep of the top four spots in the long jump. Stephens finished second (5.06 meters – 16' 7.25”), Hugo was third (4.85 meters – 15' 11”) and Wharton placed fourth (4.83 meters – 15' 10.25”). In the triple jump, Stephens was followed by freshman Carla Auguste (Brooklyn/Midwood) in second place (10.38 meters – 34' 0.75”) and senior Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) in third (10.03 meters – 32' 11”).

In addition to her win in the shot put, Vancol finished second in the weight throw (11.08 meters – 36' 4.25”). Freshman Alex Seymour (Etna/Dryden) and senior Christi Nassauer (Mount Sinai) each cleared 3.10 meters (10' 2”) in the pole vault. Seymour tied for second and Nassauer finished fourth due to number of misses.

Freshman Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) finished third in the 800 meters (2:30.53), while junior Colleen Fischman (Orchard Park/Hamburg) finished fourth in both the 3,000 meters (10:54.11) and 800 meters (2:37.79).

Cortland will compete at the Ithaca Bomber Invitational next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3.
