POTSDAM, N.Y. - Cortland outlasted Geneseo in five sets before falling to Fredonia in three sets during the second day of SUNYAC play at SUNY Potsdam. The Red Dragons are now 12-14 overall and 3-3 in the league with three conference matches remaining toward the end of October.
Cortland beat Geneseo 25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 22-25, 15-13.
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) led the Red Dragons withi 13 kills and 15 digs and
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) had 11 kills and five blocks.
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) added eight kills and four blocks and
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) finished with 44 assists, three aces, nine digs and three blocks.
Fredonia swept Cortland 25-20, 25-10, 25-19. Czeczotka had seven kills and 12 digs. Hintz and
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) added five kills each,
Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) recorded 17 digs and Roberts had 20 assists.
Cortland is in sixth place in the SUNYAC with three matches remaining. New Paltz leads with a 6-0 mark, followed by Buffalo State at 5-2. Three teams - Fredonia, Potsdam and Plattsburgh - are tied for third at 4-2, with Cortland at 3-3 and Oneonta at 2-4. Oswego and Geneseo are each 1-5 and Brockport is 0-6. Cortland will play New Paltz, Buffalo State and Brockport during the final weekend of league play in Buffalo. The top six teams will qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.
Cortland will play a non-league match at RIT on Tuesday, October 15, at 6 p.m.
