CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman
Shelby Underwood (Marathon) scored three goals and assisted on another and freshman
Katie Gotte (Harrison) recorded her first two collegiate goals as nationally 16th-ranked Cortland completed its regular-season schedule with a 9-0 shutout versus visiting Houghton College.
The Red Dragons (13-2) posted their 10th straight victory. Cortland will host the four-team SUNYAC tournament next Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9, and will play Oneonta in the semifinals Friday at 11 a.m.
Freshmen goalies
Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) and
Chelsea Palma (Holbrook/Sachem North) combined for the shutout, although neither one had to make a save. Hourihan played the first half and Palma the second. Cortland outshot the Highlanders 39-1, with the guests' lone shot missing just wide of the cage in the final minute.
Freshman
Alexa Sanzone (Rome/Rome Free Academy) recorded a goal and two assists. Senior
Erin Smith (Greene) and freshman Gabrielle Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) each finished with a goal and an assist and sophomore
Brittany Murphy (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored once.
Emily Thompson (Highlands Ranch, CO/Valor Christian) started in goal for Houghton (5-12) and made 16 saves. She played the first half as well as the final 29:08 of the game. Carly Congilosi (Hamburg/Eden) made two saves in 5:52 of action at the start of the second half. In addition, Hannah Zgrablich (Doylestown, PA/Plumstead Christian) and Maddie Malda (Dallastown, PA) each registered a defensive save for the Highlanders.
Gotte opened the scoring just 1:53 into the game off a Stein assist. Underwood tallied in the 13th minute off a
Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) assist and Smith scored unassisted in the 22nd minute. The lead grew to 5-0 at halftime on an Underwood goal in the 25th minute and Stein's goal – her team-high 20th of the season – off a Sanzone assist in the 32nd minute.
Underwood completed her hat trick 9:13 into the second half with an unassisted goal, then set up Sanzone in the 52nd minute to extend the lead to 7-0. Cortland's final two goals came during the last three minutes as Gotte scored, assisted by Smith, with 2:37 left and Murphy scored off a Murphy assist with 2:14 remaining.
