Red Dragons Skate to 4-4 OT Tie vs. Morrisville St.

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland men's hockey team scored four power-play goals in playing to a 4-4 tie versus Morrisville St. Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons are now 1-2-1 overall and in the conference. The Mustangs' record stands at 1-3-1 overall and in league play.

Junior Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) led Cortland with one goal and one assist. Seniors Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert) and Mike Henrici (North Haven, CT/Manhattanville) and freshman Casie Garrison (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) each contributed a goal with Garrison's being the first of his career. Senior Stephen Nardi (Plainedge/NY Bobcats) and freshman Matt Esposito (Fayetteville/Rochester Stars) recorded two assists apiece, while senior A.J. Moyer (Perkasie, PA/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and sophomores Mike Davie (Brooklyn/NY Apple Core) and Brant Sherwood (Rochester/Plymouth St.) collected one assist each. Senior goalie Mark Balkwill (Saskatoon, SK/Broome CC) made 37 saves in his first career start as a Red Dragon.

Seniors Ryan Marcuz (Richmond Hill, ON/Brampton Capitals) and Mike Dolman (Hawthorne, NJ/Neumann University) paced the Mustangs with one goal and one assist. Sophomores Eric Fletcher (Adrian, MI/Huntsville Otters) and Steve Dol (Ingersoll, ON/Stratford Cullitons) each netted a goal. Freshman Darren Young (Woodstock, ON/NJ Canucks) recorded three assists, and junior Matthew Beer (Corunna, ON/Estevan Bruins) and sophomores Zach Bayer (Glendale, AZ/Lindsay Muskies) and Matt Scherer (Elgin, IL/Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) contributed one assist apiece. Senior goalie Christopher Azzano (Oshawa, ON/Wentworth) registered 39 saves.

The teams traded goals all game long with Morrisville grabbing a 1-0 lead at four minutes, six seconds of the opening period when Dolman converted on a 3-on-0 after a Cortland turnover. Henrici evened the score at 7:44 of the first with a deflection in front with the Red Dragons skating with a two-man advantage. The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission on Marcuz's goal on a loose puck in front at 8:59.

Zappia made it a 2-2 game at 2:20 of the second period, knocking in a shot on a sharp angle from the right side. Morrisville reclaimed the lead just 50 seconds later on Dol's rebound goal. Garrison tied the game at 3-3 with his first career goal on a deflection in the slot at 11:54 only to have the Mustangs answer with Fletcher's goal from the right point at 14:34 on the power play.

Just before the midway point of the third period, Bevilacqua scored the game-tying goal when he collected a rebound on the left side and sent a shot just under the crossbar to make it a 4-4 game. Morrisville out shot Cortland, 8-5, in the overtime with Balkwill making two key saves with just over 30 seconds remaining to preserve the tie.
