Last Relay the Difference in Cortland's 152-148 Loss to Visiting Geneseo

Miranda Fergus won both 1-meter and 3-meter diving
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Geneseo took first and third place in the final 400-yard freestyle relay and the Knights edged Cortland, 152-148, in dual-meet action at Holsten Pool.

Geneseo pushed its record to 2-1 with the win. Cortland is now 0-3.

Cortland led 144-139 entering the last event, but Geneseo earned 11 points for first place and two points for third place, while the Red Dragons scored four points for second. The Knights rallied to take third by 51 hundredths of a second; otherwise, the meet would have ended in a 150-150 tie.

Three Cortland competitors earned two individual victories each. Senior Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) won the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.69) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.95). Senior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) captured the 50-yard freestyle (24.98) and 100-yard freestyle (55.09) and sophomore Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) won 1-meter diving (256.45 points) and 3-meter diving (261.05 points).

Junior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:01.17), junior Michaela Auer (Oswego) was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.38) and sophomore Ally Baraban (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) was the winner in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.89).

In addition, Culmo was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.63), Hickey placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.06), Caputo finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:22.05) and freshman Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.46).

The combination of Ford, Auer, Hickey and senior M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) won the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet in 1:52.12. Dugue, sophomore Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA), Caputo and Culmo comprised the Red Dragons' second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:41.18).

Cortland will host Buffalo State in a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m.
