ONEONTA, N.Y. - Junior
Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls) won the individual conference title as the Cortland men's cross country team won its 14th State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and first since 2008.
The Red Dragons, ranked 15tth nationally, posted a convincing victory at the conference championship meet at Fortin Park. The Red Dragons placed nine runners in the top 13 and finished with 20 points. Geneseo, ranked 18th nationally, was second with 41 points and Fredonia was third with 84 points. Rounding out the field were Oneonta (113), New Paltz (155), Oswego (174), Buffalo St. (179), Plattsburgh (229) and Brockport (283).
Marcantonio won the 8,000-meter race in 24 minutes, 51.5 seconds. Joining him on the all-league first team with top-five finishes were senior
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) in second place (25:00.0) and senior
Casey Austin (Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain) in fourth place (25:11.1).
Three Red Dragons earned second-team all-league honors with placements between sixth and 10th place. Senior
Pat Fannon (West Islip) finished sixth (25:22.0), junior
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) was seventh (25:24.0) and senior
Tim Lee (West Babylon) finished ninth (25:31.3).
Three more Cortland runners were named third-team All-SUNYAC by finishing between 11th and 15th place. Junior
Arturo Salas (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) was 11th (25:36.0), junior
Joe Ray (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) finished 12th (25:41.6) and freshman
Gabe Rodriguez (Geneseo) placed 13th (25:41.7).
Four Cortland runners - Austin, Fannon, Iacovelli and Lee - are new additions to the SUNYAC Hall of Fame. Runners earns a spot in the Hall of Fame with either a top-five finish once, a top-10 finish twice or a top-15 finish three times.
