Cortland Men Knock Off Visiting Buffalo State, 177-106

Dylan Burns won both the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Adam Opsahl (East Lyme, CT) won three individual events and led off a winning relay as Cortland defeated visiting Buffalo State, 177-106, in a dual meet.

Opsahl won the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.19), 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.03) and 400-yard individual medley (4:30.14) for the Red Dragons, who are now 1-3 on the season. Opsahl also combined with sophomore Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), freshman Andrew Garcia (Suffern) and freshman Dylan Burns (Cornwall) to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.60).

Burns won the 50-yard freestyle (22.48) and 200-yard backstroke (2:09.68) and senior Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.21) and 500-yard freestyle (4:58.14). Sophomore Reeve Callen (Oswego) captured the 100-yard backstroke (57.24) and 100-yard freestyle (47.66), the latter as an exhibition entry.

Junior Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) won the 100-yard butterfly (56.44) and finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.75) and 400-yard individual medley (4:41.84). Jakubek won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.32).

Sophomore Chris Leary (Suffern), Garcia, senior Greg MacDonald (Monroe, NJ/St. Joseph's) and Callen won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.64). MacDonald placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.71) and Leary was second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.23).

Also for the Red Dragons, senior John Weilert (West Islip) was runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:33.95), junior Esteban Rodriguez (Hartsdale/Woodlands) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.93) and freshman Jamie Miller (Eden) finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.68). Hanifin, Rodriguez, Leary and Miller placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.41).

Cortland will compete at the Ithaca Invitational Dec. 6-8.
