Cortland Women Compete at Ithaca Invitational

Sarah Culmo finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland earned a total of 17 individual scoring finishes at the three-day, 12-team Ithaca Women's Swimming and Diving Invitational. Senior Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill), junior Michaela Auer (Oswego) and junior Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) each scored in three events.

Hickey finished seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.37), 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.75) and 19th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.00). Auer turned in an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.37), a 16th-place effort in the 50-yard freestyle (25.13) and a 20th-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.19). Caputo placed ninth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:27.81), 11th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.03) and 21st in the 400-yard individual medley (4:59.73).

Senior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) finished ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.83) and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle (54.31), while sophomore Chelsey Simon (Oneida) was 11th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.74) and 19th in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:50.01).

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Angelica Ford (Elk Grove Village, IL) finished 22nd in the 400-yard individual medley (4:59.85) and sophomore Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA) placed 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle (25.44).

In diving, sophomore Miranda Fergus (Millbrook) finished sixth (394.10 points) and senior Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) placed 12th (341.80 points) in the 11-dive 1-meter competition.

Cortland's best scoring relay finish came in the 4x50-yard medley relay as Ford, Auer, Cornetta and Culmo placed eighth in 1:53.48.

Cortland finished ninth in the final team scoring with 409 points. Cornell won the team title, followed by Springfield and Geneseo.

Cortland will travel to Oneonta on Saturday, Dec. 14, for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
