Second-Half Run Propels Cortland Past Fredonia, 65-52

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Senior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored a game-high 15 points and became the second player in program history to surpass the career 1,400-point mark as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 65-52. The Red Dragons lead the SUNYAC with a 10-2 record and are now 16-3 overall after winning their eighth straight game.

Winter has scored 1,403 points in his four seasons at Cortland. Jason Thomas is the team's career scoring leader with 1,419 points from 1992-95.

Junior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) finished with 14 points and six rebounds, senior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) added 12 points and sophomore Lamard Herron (Westbury) recorded 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Senior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) had seven points and a team-high seven rebounds and senior Dan Sternkopf (Washingtonville) blocked three shots.

Dalton Kashmer led Fredonia (6-12, 2-10 SUNYAC) with 12 points. Robert Lyles, Tyrone Clark and Amir Billups scored nine points apiece, while Billups and Devin Case shared team honors with six rebounds each.

Cortland used a 16-1 run to break open a tight game midway through the second half. Fredonia was within 41-40 after two Case foul shots with 11:21 left. The Red Dragons started their game-breaking stretch with a McMahon layup and a Herron dunk. Winter followed with a four-point play when he hit a three-pointer and was fouled with 9:40 left.

McMahon's three-point play at the 8:52 mark extended the lead to 12. Following a Clark free throw, Herron made a layup with 8:16 left and Smith finished the run with a three-pointer with 6:02 left.

Fredonia scored the next six points – three each by Lyles and Billups – to draw back within 10 with 4:18 left. Cortland, however, outscored the Blue Devils 7-0 over the next four minutes to put the game away.

Cortland held the Blue Devils to 29 percent shooting from the floor overall and from three-point range. The Red Dragons made 42 percent of their shots, but only 23 percent (6-of-26) from the three-point line.

Cortland will play at Buffalo State Saturday at 4 p.m.
