Three ECAC Qualifiers Among Highlights for Cortland Men at Deneault Invitational

Nick Avossa's seventh-place time of 8.61 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles is an ECAC qualifier
ITHACA, N.Y. – Three Cortland competitors reached ECAC qualifying standards at the Cornell University Men's Indoor Track and Field Marc Deneault Memorial Invitational.

Senior Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) finished fourth out of 26 competitors in the shot put at 14.43 meters (47' 4.25”). Sophomore Nick Avossa (Kingston) was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.61 seconds and junior Melique Garcia (Watervliet) placed eighth out of 38 in the 60-meter dash in 7.12 seconds, with his ECAC-qualifying time of 7.08 seconds occurring in the preliminaries.

Cortland's other highlights included a fourth-place high jump of 1.89 meters (6' 2.25”) by junior P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) and Garcia's seventh-place finish in a field of 41 in the 200-meter dash (23.25). Three other Red Dragons posted top-15 showings in the 200 meters. Freshman Keewan Rondinello (Liverpool) finished 10th (23.49), freshman Darrius Samples (Islandia/Hauppauge) was 14th (23.66) and junior Steven Damiani (West Islip) finished 15th (23.68).

Junior Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished seventh in the weight throw (15.29 meters – 50' 2”) and 12th in the shot put (13.18 meters – 43' 3”), while senior Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) was ninth in the weight throw (14.56 meters – 47' 9.25”) and 10th in the shot put (13.35 meters – 43' 9.75”).

Junior Mike Kelly (Coram/Longwood) finished 16th in a field of 40 in the 800-meter run (2:00.88). Sophomore Zach Zieniewicz (Seaford) was 12th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.91) and freshman Jimmy Moyer (Oneida) turned in a 10th-place finish in the long jump (6.52 meters – 21' 4.75”).

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships next Saturday, Feb. 23, at Brockport. The meet begins at 9 a.m. The Red Dragons finished second at the event last season.
