CORTLAND, N.Y. - Seniors
Chris Kaleta (Hamburg/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and
Michael Lysyj (Hillsborough, NJ/South Shore Kings) combined for six points to help lead the Cortland men's hockey team to a 4-3 win versus Morrisville St. Saturday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena in the team's final regular-season home game. The Red Dragons improved to 7-12-2 overall and 3-8-1 in the conference, while the Mustangs fell to 4-16-2 and 4-10.
Kaleta registered two goals and one assist, and Lysyj contributed one goal and two assists. Junior
Adam Bevilacqua (Toronto, ON/St. Norbert) tallied Cortland's other goal. Freshman
Adam Diorio (Staten Island/NY Bobcats) recorded two assists, and junior
Stephen Nardi (Plainedge/NY Bobcats), sophomore
Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) and freshman
Ryan Wagner (Buffalo/Aberdeen Wings) each chipped in with one assist. Junior goalie
Lyle Rocker (Buffalo/Wisconsin-River Falls) turned aside a season-high 45 shots.
Junior Mike Dolman (Hawthorne, NJ/Neumann University) paced Morrisville with one goal and one assist, while junior Ryan Marcuz (Richmond Hill, ON/Brampton Capitals) and freshman Matt Scherer (Elgin, IL/Kirkland Lake Gold Miners) each scored a goal. Junior Jamie Nelson (Stratford, ON/Stratford Cullitons) and freshman Anthony Scornaienchi (Stoney Creek, ON/Thorold Blackhawks) had one assist apiece. Junior goalie Christopher Azzano (Oshawa, ON/Wentworth) made 33 saves.
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead at 13 minutes, 55 seconds of the first period when Marcuz scored on a one-timer from the right circle. Kaleta tied the game at 18:06 of the first with a power-play goal, knocking a rebound past Azzano right in front.
The Red Dragons struck for a pair of goals just 15 seconds apart early in the second period for a 3-1 lead. At 2:27, Lysyj stuffed in a loose puck on the power play and Bevilacqua converted a rebound at 2:42. Morrisville answered quickly, however, when Dolman put a rebound past Rocker 15 seconds later.
The Mustangs pulled to within 4-3 at 9:40 of the third period. Scherer forced a Cortland turnover and made it count when he scored on a wrist shot from the slot. Morrisville pulled Azzano with 1:10 remaining and pressured the Red Dragons put could not score the equalizer as Cortland held on for the key conference win.
