Cortland Men Maintain Lead After SUNYAC Championships Second Day

Judd Simon set a school record in the 100-yard backstroke and swam the leadoff leg on school-record 800-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland freshman Reeve Callen (Oswego) won the 200-yard freestyle and swam the anchor leg on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team that set a school record during the second day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Cortland still holds the team lead with one day remaining. The Red Dragons have 519 points, followed by 14-time defending champion Geneseo with 476. The Knights gained 10 points on Cortland during the second day of action. Oneonta is third in the nine-team field with 380, followed by Fredonia with 264. The championship is being held at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College.

Callen recorded a time of 1:42.13 to win the 200-yard freestyle. To end the evening, the quartet of senior Judd Simon (Oneida), junior Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain), freshman Andrew Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) and Callen posted a school-record time of 6:55.77 to win the 800-yard freestyle relay. They broke the old record of 6:56.75 set by Drew Hilker, Caleb VanSickle, Jeff Moessinger and Dan Evans in 2009.

Simon recorded one individual and two relay school records Friday. In addition to his role in the 800-yard freestyle relay, Simon broke the 100-yard backstroke record with his third-place time of 51.98 seconds and swam the opening leg on the second-place 200-yard medley relay that finished in a school-best 1:33.27.

Senior Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool), junior Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) and senior Dan Maximowicz (Chenango Forks) were the other swimmers in that relay, which broke the previous record of 1:33.98 set last year by Strickland, Danny Salvatore, Dylan Scheemaker and Maximowicz. Strickland set the previous 100-yard backstroke record of 51.99 seconds in 2011.

Cremer finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.32) and freshman Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.43). All individual champions at the meet earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors. Second-place and third-place individual finishers are awarded second-team all-league status.

Freshman Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (51.76, 51.65 prelims). Senior Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.45), senior Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) finished sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (52.83) and McManus won the “B” final to finish ninth overall in the 400-yard individual medley (4:18.28).

Cortland added eight other top-16 scoring efforts. Sophomore Mike Sutz (Orchard Park) was 11th in both the 400 IM (4:23.80) and 100-yard breastroke (1:01.61), while junior Gregory MacDonald (Mnoroe Township, NJ/St. Joseph's) placed 12th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.52) and 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.49).

Junior Luke Strothenke (New Paltz) and sophomore Antrico Forbest (Brooklyn/Ralph R. McKee) finished 10th (54.13) and 11th (55.34), respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) was 13th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.71, 53.59 in prelims) and freshman Mark Schoenherr (New Rochelle/Iona Prep) finished 14th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.77, 1:47.37 in prelims).
