Cortland Women Finish Second at SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships

Krista Caputo set a school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland broke three school records and met three national standards during the final day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The three-day conference meet was held at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center.

Cortland finished second out of nine schools in the final team standings with 586 points. It's the Red Dragons' best team finish since a runner-up finish in 2007 and the program's eighth top-three showing in the last 10 years. Geneseo won its sixth straight SUNYAC crown with 772 points. Cortland narrowly edged third-place Fredonia (567) and fourth-place New Paltz (561) in the standings.

Junior Sarah Culmo (West Islip) repeated as league champion in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.00 seconds. The time is an NCAA “B” cut and breaks her own school record of 52.10 seconds set last season.

Sophomore Krista Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis) finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:43.11. The time easily breaks the school record of 18:03.96 set by Liz Neddo in 2009. In addition, Caputo's split time of 10:39.44 is a school record for the 1,000-yard freestyle, breaking her own mark of 10:49.94 from last year.

All individual champions at the meet earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors. Second-place and third-place individual finishers are awarded second-team all-league status.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of senior Jessica Evans (Hamburg), freshman Katie Cornetta (Gardner, MA), freshman Chelsey Simon (Oneida) and Culmo finished second in 3:32.99.

Senior Abigail MacDonald (East Amherst/Williamsville North) broke the school record and posted an NCAA “B” cut with her fourth-place time of 2:06.67 in the 200-yard backstroke. She held the previous record of 2:08.06 last season. Freshman Miranda Fergus (Pleasant Valley/Millbrook) finished fourth in 1-meter diving with 424.45 points, which qualifies her for next week's NCAA Northeast/South Diving Regionals at Ithaca College.

Other championship finals performances included Evans placing fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.69, 53.36 in prelims), junior Chrisanna Hickey (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) with a sixth-place effort in the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.00), and seventh-place finishes by Simon in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:21.81) and junior Lindsay Wigderson (Webster/Webster Thomas) in 1-meter diving (379.60 points).

Senior Katherine Harris (Long Beach) won the “B” final in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.03) for a ninth-place finish. Sophomore Michaela Auer (Oswego) and sophomore Ashley Sherard (Valley Stream) finished 10th (2:30.22) and 11th (2:33.08), respectively, in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Cortland's other scorers included senior Kelsey Roe (Auburn) in the 200-yard backstroke (14th place, 2:16.81), sophomore Lauren Kaplowitz (Stamford, CT/West Hill) in the 100-yard freestyle (14th place, 55.47), junior M.K. Dugue (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) in the 100-yard freestyle (15th place, 55.48, 54.84 in prelims) and junior Francesca Davide (Ossining) in the 200-yard butterfly (16th place, 2:19.12, 2:18.23 in prelims).
