Cortland Women Repeat as SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Champion

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland women's indoor track and field team won its second straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and 16th overall at the conference's indoor championships. The meet was held for the first time at Brockport's new Special Events and Recreation Center.

Cortland easily won the title with 172 points. Geneseo placed second with 116.5 points, followed by Buffalo State (89.5), Brockport (89), Plattsburgh (50.5), Oneonta (43), Fredonia (40.5) and Oswego (21).

(UPDATE: 2/28/13:  Cortland head coach Steve Patrick was voted as the 2013 SUNYAC Women's Indoor Track and FIeld Coach of the Year. He earned the award two times previously in 2012 and 2008.)

Cortland won four individual league titles and one relay crown. Junior Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) set a meet record with her winning long jump of 5.77 meters (18' 11.25”) to repeat as league champion in the event. She also finished second in the 60-meter dash in 7.78 seconds, tying her own school record in the process, and was third in the 200-meter dash (25.89). Senior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) broke her own school record in the triple jump with a winning distance of 11.83 meters (38' 9.75”). She also finished fourth in the long jump at 5.34 meters (17' 6.25”).

Junior Africa Harper (Bronx/John F. Kennedy) won the 400-meter dash in 58.12 seconds and finished second in the 200-meter dash in 25.89 seconds. In the pole vault, junior Kelly Hugo (Highland) won the title after clearing 3.35 meters (10' 11.75”) in a jump-off. Hugo also finished sixth in the long jump at 5.26 meters (17' 3.25”).

Cortland also won the 4x400-meter relay as sophomore Kiersten Duroe (Horseheads), senior Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North), sophomore Gabrielle Conant (Tully) and senior Abby Vander Veen (Duanesburg/Faith Bible Academy) finished in 4:02.79.

Sophomore Taylor Hudson (Victor) finished second in both the high jump and long jump. She actually matched the best height in the high jump at 1.63 meters (5' 4.25”), but placed second officially due to number of misses. She finished only behind Bonnell in the long jump at 5.52 meters (18' 1.5”). In addition, Hudson finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.53, 9.28 prelims) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (26.48).

The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference.

Senior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.35), fourth in the high jump (1.58 meters – 5' 2.25”) and eighth in the long jump (5.13 meters – 16' 10”).

Junior Alexandra Budd (Riverhead) was third in the high jump at 1.58 meters (5' 2.25”), placing ahead of Schafer due to number of misses. Senior Christi Nassauer (Mount Sinai) finished third in the pole vault at 3.30 meters (10' 10”) and sophomore Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) was third in the shot put at 12.17 meters (39' 11.25”). The distance medley relay of freshman Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park), senior Alexis Grable (Pine Bush), freshman Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) and senior Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) finished third in 12:49.00.

Senior Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) placed fourth in the triple jump at 10.79 meters (35' 5”). Grable finished fifth in the 400 meters (1:00.19), sophomore Kenya Outram (Brooklyn/Victory Collegiate) was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.42, 9.37 prelims).

Junior Colleen Fischman (Orchard Park/Hamburg) finished fifth in the 3,000 meters (10:39.79) and freshman Alex Seymour (Etna/Dryden) tied for fifth in the pole vault at 3.15 meters (10' 4”). Naylon was sixth in the mile (5:14.24) and freshman Carla Auguste (Brooklyn/Midwood) finished sixth in the triple jump (10.65 meters – 34' 11.25”).

Four Red Dragons turned in seventh-place finishes – freshman Kayla Koelbel (Bradford, PA/Kings Park (NY)) in the 60-meter hurdles (10.02, 9.53 prelims), Blomback in the mile (5:15.32), Balzano in the 800 meters (2:21.47) and sophomore Nicole Bell (Rochester/Gates Chili) in the pole vault (tied 7th, 3.00 meters – 9' 10”).

Other Cortland scorers were Triantafillou with an eighth-place showing in the 400 meters (1:01.14) and freshman Angelique Jean-Charles (Elmont/Valley Stream) in the 60-meter hurdles (10.91, 9.49 prelims).

Cortland will compete at the ECAC Div. III Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City. The Red Dragons' ECAC qualifiers during the SUNYAC Championships were: Harper in the 400 meters and 200 meters; Hugo in the pole vault and long jump; Bonnell in the long jump, 60-meter dash and 200 meters; Stephens in the triple jump and long jump; Hudson in the high jump, long jump, 60-meter hurdles and 200 meters; Schafer in the 60-meter hurdles and high jump; Budd in the high jump; Nassauer in the pole vault; Vancol in the shot put; Outram in the 60-meter hurdles; Grable in the 400 meters; Fischman in the 3,000 meters; Naylon and Blomback in the mile; and Balzano in the 800 meters. Both relays were also ECAC qualifiers.
