Bonnell's Three Wins, Schafer's Pentathlon Victory Among Highlights at Ithaca Invite

Nikki Schafer's winning pentathlon score of 3,384 points is currently the best nationally in Div. III
ITHACA,N.Y. – Junior Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) recorded three of Cortland's five victories at the Ithaca College Women's Indoor Track and Field Bomber Invitational.

All three of Bonnell's winning efforts met ECAC Div. III Championship qualifying standards. She won the 60-meter dash in 7.93 seconds (7.91 in prelims) and the 200-meter dash in 26.27 seconds, as well as the long jump with a leap of 5.68 meters (18' 7.75”).

Senior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) won the pentathlon with a score of 3,384 points that is currently the best nationally in Div. III. The score is also a school and SUNYAC record, eclipsing Christina Acquaviva's 3,271 points from 2006 that held both records. Sophomore Taylor Hudson (Victor) finished third with 3,200 points. Schafer recorded ECAC marks in three of the five events with her second-place time of 9.41 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, her third-place height of 1.65 meters (5' 5”) in the high jump and her tie for fourth in the long jump at 5.22 meters (17' 1.5”). Hudson hit two ECAC marks with her winning long jump (5.47 meters – 17' 11.5”) and fourth-place high jump (1.62 meters – 5' 3.75”).

Senior Jordyn Naylon (Fairport) won the mile run with an ECAC time of 5:09.54. Junior Africa Harper (Bronx/John F. Kennedy) finished second behind Bonnell in the 200 meters in an ECAC time of 26.52 seconds. She also led off the second-place 4x400-meter relay that also included senior Alexis Grable (Pine Bush), senior Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North) and senior Abby Vander Veen (Duanesburg/Faith Bible Academy). Their ECAC-qualifying time of 4:01.68 currently ranks 16th on the NCAA Div. III charts.

Three other Red Dragons posted ECAC qualifying performances. Junior Kelly Hugo (Highland) finished third in the pole vault at 3.45 meters (11' 3.75”), followed by freshman Alex Seymour (Etna/Dryden) in fourth place at 3.30 meters (10' 10”). Junior Alexandra Budd (Riverhead) tied for fifth place in the high jump with a height of 1.58 meters (5' 2.25”).

Freshman Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) finished third in the 800 meters (2:23.68) and senior Alana Hotchkiss (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) was third in the triple jump (10.26 meters – 33' 8”). Triantafillou finished fourth in the 400 meters (1:02.08), senior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) finished fourth in the long jump (5.13 meters – 16' 10”) and sophomore Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) placed fourth in the shot put (11.20 meters – 36' 9”).

Junior Trisha Clark (Pulaski) turned in a fifth-place time of 2:25.24 in the 800 meters and freshman Kerri Culhane (Sayville) was fifth in the mile (5:20.05). Junior Lisa Bodratti (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.76) and sophomore Erica Wharton (Putnam Valley) placed sixth in the long jump (4.97 meters – 16' 3.75”).

Six other Red Dragons recorded individual top-eight finishes. Sophomore Hannah Anthes (Liverpool) finished seventh in the 60-meter dash (8.32, 8.28 prelims), senior Liz Henry (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) was seventh in the 400 meters (1:03.32) and freshman Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) finished seventh in the mile (5:21.79). Freshman Angelique Jean-Charles (Elmont/Valley Stream) finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (9.87, 9.82 prelims), junior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) was seventh in the triple jump (9.79 meters – 32' 1.5”) and sophomore Megan O'Regan (West Islip) tied for eighth in the high jump (1.53 meters – 5' 0.25”).

The combination of sophomore Kiersten Duroe (Horseheads), freshman Breana Lindquist (Sayville), senior Cassandra Viola (Orangeburg/Tappan Zee) and sophomore Gabrielle Conant (Tully) finished third in the 4x200-meter relay (1:51.50).

The Red Dragons had two 4x400-meter relay units finish in the top eight. The quartet of freshman Saige Thomas (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy), Henry, Conant and Duroe finished sixth (4:13.92), while Balzano, Clark, Culhane and Naylon placed eighth (4:17.85).
