Four Double-Winners Help Cortland Defeat Fredonia, 177.5-116.5

Ben Strickland won both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke races and led off the winning 200-yard medley relay team
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Four Cortland swimmers were individual double-winners as the Red Dragons posted a 177.5-116.5 dual-meet victory over Fredonia. Cortland completes the dual season with a 12-5 record.

Senior Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/HomeSchool) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.67) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.51) and senior Dan Maximowicz (Chenango Forks) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.81) and 100-yard freestyle (49.05). Freshman Mathew Hasbrouck (New Paltz) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.90) and 100-yard butterfly (53.35), while freshman Andrew Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) was victorious in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:03.38) and 500-yard freestyle (4:53.88).

Senior Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.93) and finished second in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:22.32) and 100-yard backstroke (55.22). Freshman Reeve Callen (Oswego) completed Cortland's top-three sweep in the 1,000-yard freestyle with his third-place time of 10:22.43.

Junior Mark Hanifin (Fort Plain) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.50) and was second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.74). Senior Judd Simon (Oneida) posted the fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.36) as an exhibition entry.

The quartet of Strickland, senior Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal), junior Brandon McManus (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) and Maximowicz won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:37.72, followed in second place by junior Luke Strothenke (New Paltz), freshman Jack Jakubek (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), Hasbrouck and sophomore Antrico Forbes (Brooklyn/Ralph R. McKee) in 1:39.23.

Freshman Nick Dischiavo (New Hartford) finished second behind Strickland in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.90) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.84). Freshman Chris Leary (Suffern) finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.43) and MacQuarrie was third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.67) to complete sweeps in those events.

Freshman Lee Wade (Holtsville/Sachem East) finished second in both 1-meter diving (233.15 points) and 3-meter diving (266.40 points) and sophomore Alex Spatzer (Buffalo/Kenmore West) was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.73). Junior Matt Latorre (Bethlehem) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.14), followed by Leary in third (50.93) for the sweep. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Latorre, Callen, Forbes and freshman Mark Schoenherr (New Rochelle/Iona Prep) had the second-best time (1:29.18) as an exhibition entry.

Cortland's seniors – MacQuarrie, Maximowicz, Nelson, Simon and Strickland - were honored at their final home meet.

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 20-23 at Erie Community College's Flickinger Center in Buffalo.
