#1 Red Dragons Defeat #13 Cabrini with Strong Second Half

RADNOR, PA. – The nationally top-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team out scored 13th-ranked Cabrini College, 6-3, over the final 30 minutes of the game to earn a 10-7 road victory Saturday afternoon in Radnor, Pa. The Red Dragons improved to 5-0 with the non-conference win, while the Cavaliers fell to 3-3 with the loss.

Junior Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) led the Cortland offense with four goals, surpassing 100 points in his career with 68 goals and 34 assists. Sophomore Billy Davis (Manhasset) scored a career-best three goals, sophomore Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) netted a pair of goals, junior Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) tallied one goal and one assist, freshman Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) recorded two assists and junior Doug Meehan (Sayville) and sophomore Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) each chipped in with one assist.

Senior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) matched his season high with 15 saves for the Red Dragons. Junior J.T. Foltz (Auburn) caused two turnovers, and sophomore Patrick Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) registered a team-high three ground balls.

Corey Elmer paced Cabrini with three goals. Bobby Thorp scored twice, Ethan Heisman and Andrew Protenic netted one goal apiece and four other players each contributed an assist. Goalie Chris Treat made 14 saves. Anthony DiNenno won 13-of-19 faceoffs, and Tim Grenier collected three ground balls.

The Cavaliers built a 3-1 lead before the midpoint of the opening quarter. Thorp scored just nine seconds into the game, Slavik answered with his first of the game at 13 minutes, one second and Elmer tallied back-to-back scores at 11:51 and 8:45, respectively. Davis and Rakoczy pulled Cortland even at 3-3 at the end of 15 minutes. Protenic and Slavik then traded goals in the second quarter and the teams were tied 4-4 at intermission.

Slavik gave Cortland its first lead of the game at 10:44 of the third quarter before Davis scored off a Hopps' feed at 9:10 and the Red Dragons led, 6-4, heading into the final quarter. The Cavaliers quickly tied the game as Elmer and Thorp netted goals 41 seconds apart to start the final stanza. Neither team scored again until Slavik netted his fourth of the game at 5:48 and Consul followed with what would prove to be the game-winner at 4:32 to make it 8-6 in favor of Cortland. Heisman brought Cabrini to within 8-7 with his score at 1:55, but Davis scored 43 seconds later and Rakoczy sealed the win on a goal with just 36 seconds remaining.
