Defense Dominates Dutchmen in #1 Cortland's 10-1 Win at #14 Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The nationally top-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team scored the final 10 goals of the game to defeat 14th-ranked Union College, 10-1, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Dutchmen fell to 0-1.

Freshman James Stavrakis (Hillsborough, NJ) led the Cortland offense with four goals, the first scores of his career. Junior Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) registered three goals and one assist, freshman Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) contributed one goal and one assist, sophomores Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) and Billy Davis (Manhasset) each netted a goal and sophomore Benjamin Dunlavey (Elmira/Corning East) distributed two assists.

Senior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made 15 saves for the Red Dragons, one short of his career high. Freshman Pat Baldwin (Alpharetta, GA) won 10-of-13 faceoffs and collected a game-high seven ground balls. Junior Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) recorded three caused turnovers and four ground balls, and junior Doug Meehan (Sayville) and sophomore Patrick Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) chipped in with three ground balls apiece.

Sophomore Richard Gregory (Darien, CT) tallied Union's goal with junior Stephen Melia (Arlington, MA/Buckingham Browne and Nichols) assisting. Sophomore Adam Sands (Greenwich, CT) recorded team highs of five ground balls and two caused turnovers, senior Alex Stone (Cranford, NJ) registered four ground balls and Melia added three ground balls. Sophomore goalie Stefan Basile (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) stopped 14 shots.

Gregory gave Union the lead five minutes, 22 seconds into the game with a man-down goal. The advantage held up through the first quarter as the Dutchmen led 1-0. From the second quarter on, the game belonged to Cortland. The Red Dragons took control of the contest by outscoring Union, 6-0, in the second quarter as Consul and Stavrakis each netted a pair of goals with Stavrakis' scores closing the half to make it 6-1.

Cortland pushed its lead to 8-1 through three quarters when Dunlavey set up goals by Consul at 6:59 and Stavrakis at 1:26. Stavrakis tallied his fourth of the game at 9:32 of the fourth quarter, and Davis finished the scoring with an unassisted effort at 6:44.

The Red Dragons won 11-of-15 faceoffs in the game, converted 22-of-23 clears and held the Dutchmen scorelesss over the final 54:38.
