Cortland Bats Explode to Earn Doubleheader Split at TCNJ

EWING, N.J. – Cortland rallied from a 6-2 deficit after one inning to defeat The College of New Jersey, 13-7, and earn a split of a non-league doubleheader versus the host Lions. TCNJ (10-4) shut out Cortland in the opener, 3-0, as the Red Dragons (6-8) left nine runners on base, six in scoring position.

Game 1: TCNJ 3, Cortland 0 (Box Score)

Ashtin Helmer pitched a seven-hit shutout with five strikeouts and two walks to improve to 4-0 on the season for the Lions. Liz Huttner went 2-for-2, including an RBI single that drove in TCNJ's first run of the game in the third.

The Lions added a run in the fifth on Ashley Sogluizzo's sacrifice fly in the fifth and another in the sixth on Steph Vuono's two-out RBI single. Christine Desiderio walked twice and scored two runs.

Senior Nicole Gallo (Mount Sinai) finished 2-for-2 with a double and hit-by-pitch and senior Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) was 2-for-4 for Cortland. Sophomore Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) pitched a complete-game five-hitter with five walks.

Cortland loaded the bases in the third before a strikeout ended the inning. In the sixth, the Red Dragons' first two batters reached before a flyout and double-play grounder ended the threat. Cortland also had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh before a lineout double play ended the game.

Game 2: Cortland 13, TCNJ 7 (Box Score)

Sophomore Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) and junior Alicia Hibbard (Canastota) each drove in three runs, Meola went 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI and freshman Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to help Cortland salvage the split.

Cortland scored two runs in the first, one on a Gallo RBI double, but TCNJ put up six runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter in the bottom of the inning. Cortland starter Krista Oakes (Akwesasne/Salmon River) settled down from that point, however, and allowed only one unearned run over the final six innings for her third win in four decisions this spring.

Wolstenholme's three-run double in the third drew Cortland to within 6-5. Cork's RBI double and Meola's RBI single in the fourth put the Red Dragons up 7-6.

Cortland exploded for five runs in the fifth to take a 12-6 lead. Senior Tara Donnino's (East Northport/Northport) bases-loaded walk forced in a run, and with two outs Hibbard hit a three-run, pinch-hit double. Meola followed with an RBI single.

Sophomore Courtney Kadish (Williamsville/Williamsville North) completed Cortland's scoring with an RBI double in the sixth. TCNJ scored its final run on a two-out error in the bottom of the sixth.

Kristen Lake led the hosts in the nightcap with a 4-for-4 effort, including a three-run homer in the first. Kelly Hommen hit a two-run single just prior to Lake's homer. Nicole Hroncich allowed seven runs, four earned, in three and two-thirds innings for the loss.

Cortland is scheduled to host Nazareth in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26, at 3 p.m.
