Mike Hughes (Albany) pitched eight shutout innings in the nine-inning opener and senior
Kyle Barkley (Penn Yan) threw six shutout frames in the seven-inning nightcap as nationally second-ranked Cortland swept host Plattsburgh by identical 7-0 scores in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
The Red Dragons (16-4, 5-0 SUNYAC) and the Cardinals (3-11, 1-4 SUNYAC) will finish their three-game weekend set with a single game Sunday at noon.
GAME 1: Cortland 7, Plattsburgh 0 (Box Score)
Hughes allowed only three hits and three walks over eight innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. He struck out one batter. Sophomore
Ryan McAlary (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) threw a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout. He allowed a hit and walk and struck out two.
Senior
Zack Graczyk (Carmel) and junior
Chris Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) each drove in three runs. Jackson finished 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. Graczyk went 2-fo-4 with two doubles and also reached by a hit-by-pitch. Junior
Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) went 3-for-5, junior
P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, CT) was 2-for-4 with a walk and junior
Tim Panetta (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) finished 2-for-5 with a double.
Kyle Kelly started for Plattsburgh and allowed seven hits and three walks in five and two-thirds innings. He struck out two and gave up five runs.
Jackson's two-run single staked Cortland to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. He also singled in a run in the third. Graczyk extended the lead to 5-0 with a two-run double in the sixth. Cortland's first five runs all scored with two outs.
The Red Dragons completed the scoring with two runs in the eighth on a Graczyk RBI double and a
John Adornetto (Commack) sacrifice fly. Adornetto finished the game 1-for-2 with a double, walk, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.
Plattsburgh's best threat came in the third when Luke Weaver singled with one out, Mat Chavez walked, and a groundout moved the runners to second and third. Hughes got a flyout to right to end the inning.
GAME 2: Cortland 7, Plattsburgh 0 (Box Score)
Barkley improved to 4-0 on the season with six innings of three-hit ball. He struck out four and walked three. Senior
Zachary Badanes (Syosset) retired the side in order, two by strikeout, in the seventh.
Barkley did not allow a hit until Mike Vargues doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Cortland's defense preserved the shutout in the sixth when Ethan Kisielis was thrown out trying to score from first on a Mike Mulvihill double on a relay from center fielder

Bryan Mistretta (Commack) to Rinaldi at home.
Cortland scored in the fourth on a double steal with Jackson taking second and Adornetto stealing home. The Red Dragons plated five runs in the fifth, starting with a Graczyk sacrifice fly. The second run scored on an error, followed by a Rinaldi RBI single, a Jackson RBI triple and a Rosing run-scoring double.
The Red Dragons' final run scored in the sixth when
Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) singled, took third on a Graczyk double and scored on a
Brian Barry (Nesconset/Smithtown East) sacrifice fly.
Plattsburgh starter Brian Burns allowed five runs, but only one earned, in four and two-thirds innings. He gave up just two hits but walked four.
