Three Red Dragons Compete at Day 1 of NCAA Women's Indoor Championships

Sarah Bonnell competed in both the long jump finals and the 60-meter dash prelims
NAPERVILLE, ILL. – Three Red Dragons competed during the opening day of competition at the NCAA Div. III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by North Central College.

Junior Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) finished in 11th place in the long jump with a distance of 5.25 meters (17' 2.75”). Melissa Norville of Illinois College won the event at 6.01 meters (19' 8.75”), and the top eight placers earned All-America honors. Sophomore Taylor Hudson (Victor) qualified for the event but was unable to attend the meet.

Bonnell also ran in the 60-meter dash preliminaries and finished 14th in 8.01 seconds. The last of the eight qualifiers for Saturday's finals recorded a time of 7.73 seconds.

Junior Africa Harper (Bronx/John F. Kennedy) finished 10th in the 400-meter dash preliminaries in 57.97 seconds. She missed the eighth and final qualifying position by just under six tenths of a second.

Senior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) placed 12th in the pentathlon with 3,255 points. Keene State's Janel Haggerty won with 3,467 points. Schafer tied for first in the high jump at 1.63 meters (5' 4.25”), was eighth in both the 60-meter hurdles (9.37) and long jump (5.01 meters – 16' 5.25”), finished 12th in the 800 meters (2:36.48) and placed 13th in the shot put (9.15 meters – 30' 0.25”).

Senior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) will be Cortland's final performer at the meet when she competes in the triple jump Saturday at 2 p.m. (3 p.m. Eastern).
