Justin Torres finished first in a field of 40 competitors in the shot put at Roberts Wesleyan
Cortland men recorded a total of 13 ECAC Championship qualifying efforts at three outdoor track and field meets conducted over the weekend. Seven Red Dragons reached ECAC standards at the Moravian College Coach P Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., five accomplished the feat in distance races at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa., and one turned the trick at the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawk Open in Rochester.
At Moravian, senior
Rob Brower (Massapequa) and sophomore
Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each cleared 4.55 meters (14' 11”) in the pole vault. Due to number of misses, Brower officially finished first and Ten Eyck second in the field of 26 competitors.
Freshman
Andre Green (Philadelphia/Indian River) placed second out of 62 athletes in the long jump with a distance of 6.88 meters (22' 7”), while senior
Erik LeRoy (Kings Park) finished sixth at 6.73 meters (22' 1”). Junior
P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) finished third out of 20 in the triple jump with a distance of 13.92 meters (45' 8”).
Junior
Melique Garcia (Watervliet) finished third in a field of 59 sprinters in the 100-meter dash in 10.79 seconds. That time currently ranks 16th nationally in Div. III. Junior
Stephan Linton (Roosevelt) turned in a seventh-place time of 49.81 seconds in the 400-meter dash in a field of 57 entries.
At Bucknell, three of Cortland's ECAC qualifiers came in the 5,000-meter run and two were in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the 5,000 meters, senior
Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished ninth (14:43.82), junior
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) was 31st (14:58.75) and senior
Pat Fannon (West Islip) placed 37th (15:03.23). A total of 126 runners competed in the event. In the steeplechase, sophomore
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished 14th (9:26.94) and senior
Joe Blazey (Newark Valley) was 23rd (9:39.28).
At Roberts Wesleyan, Cortland's lone ECAC qualifier was senior
Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) with a first-place shot put of 14.38 meters (47' 2.25”). He bested 39 other competitors in the event. Other Red Dragon highlights at that meet were a first-place effort by senior
Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) in the javelin throw (47.47 meters – 155' 8.75”), a fourth-place hammer throw of 47.37 meters (155' 4.75”) by junior
Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa), and a sixth-place finish by Torres in the discus (39.18 meters – 128' 6.5”).
