POTSDAM, N.Y. – Freshman
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) went 3-for-3 with a homer, two walks, two RBI and four runs scored in the opener and sophomore
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) finished 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in the nightcap as Cortland swept a doubleheader at Potsdam. The Red Dragons won the first game, 12-6, and the second game in five innings, 12-2, to improve to 6-2 in SUNYAC play and 13-11 overall.
Game 1: Cortland 12, Potsdam 6 (Box Score)
Cortland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with the assistance of two Potsdam errors. The Bears picked up single unearned runs in the first two innings, but the Red Dragons tallied an unearned run in the fourth and took control with a five-run sixth inning that featured a Cork two-run homer and a Wolstenholme two-run double.
Junior
Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) pitched five innings for the victory. She allowed only two hits and two unearned runs, walked four and struck out five. She also entered to hit in the sixth and tripled to start Cortland's big inning.
Cork reached base in all five of her plate appearances with a homer, two singles and two walks. Freshman
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored three times, while Wolstenholme and junior
Alicia Hibbard (Canastota) each drove in two runs.
Heather Johnson finished 1-for-3 with two walks, a double and two RBI for Potsdam and Megan Johnson was 2-for-4.
Game 2: Cortland 12, Potsdam 2 (5 inn.) (Box Score)
Cortland exploded for eight runs in the top of the second to take a 9-0 lead in support of starter
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse). The inning started with a
Nicole Gallo (Mount Sinai) triple and a Wolstenholme two-run homer to left. Later in the inning,
Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a two-run double, Gallo drove in a run with a groundout and Wolstenholme hit an RBI single. With the two-run double, Meola increased her career total to 101 RBI. She is the 10th player at Cortland to reach the 100-RBI mark.
The Red Dragons scored three more runs in the fifth on consecutive RBI singles by Gallo, Wolstenholme and freshman
Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool). Potsdam's two runs came on a two-out, two-run double by Amanda Perry in the bottom of the fifth. The game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Salamone allowed six hits and did not walk anyone for the complete-game win. She struck out three and was not charged with any earned runs.
In addition to Wolstenholme's three-hit effort, Meola was 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs and Gallo finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Perry ended 2-for-3 with two RBI for Potsdam (6-12, 0-10 SUNYAC).
Cortland will play at doubleheader at defending SUNYAC champion Plattsburgh Monday at 1 p.m. in a makeup of a twinbill originally scheduled for Saturday, April 13.
