Late Surge Sends #7 Red Dragons to Sweep at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Cortland scored four times over the final two innings to erase a 2-1 deficit and the nationally seventh-ranked Red Dragons defeated host Oswego, 5-2, to complete a sweep of the Lakers in a SUNYAC doubleheader. Cortland (23-8, 9-3 SUNYAC) won the opening game, 4-0, behind Kyle Barkley's (Penn Yan) four-hit shutout.

GAME 1: Cortland 4, Oswego 0 (Box Score)

Barkley improved to 5-1 with the win in the seven-inning opener. He gave up four hits and two walks and struck out three. Zack Graczyk (Carmel) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Cortland's eight-hit attack.

Adam Bishop started for Oswego and gave up seven hits and three runs, two earned, in six innings. He struck out two and walked two. Tim Smith went 2-for-3.

Cortland broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fifth. Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) and Bryan Mistretta (Commack) drew one-out walks and Graczyk singled through the left side to drive in Iacomini.  Mistretta scored two batters later on a Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) RBI single.

The Red Dragons added a run in the sixth on an Iacomini RBI single and another in the seventh on P.J. Rinaldi's (Bethel, CT) sacrifice fly.

Oswego loaded the bases in both the first and sixth innings but couldn't score. In the first, Smith and Mike McMullen singled with one out. Following a fielder's choice force out at second, Jordan Giller walked to load the bases but Barkley got the next batter to fly out. In the sixth, Smith led off with a single. With two outs, Giller singled and Alex Jurczynski was hit by a pitch. A groundout, however, ended the threat.

GAME 2: Cortland 5, Oswego 2 (Box Score)

Cortland led 1-0 on Ralph Keppler's (Rockville Centre/Oceanside) RBI single in the top of the seventh, but Oswego averted a bigger Red Dragon inning when Keppler was later thrown out at home trying to tag on a fly ball to right to end the inning. The Lakers then took the lead on a Kyle Liner RBI single and a Scott Buniak RBI double.

In the eighth, Graczyk led off with a single and was bunted to second by John Adornetto (Commack). Rosing then singled up the middle to score Graczyk with the tying run. Rosing took second on a passed ball, went to third on a Rinaldi single and later scored on Iacomini's sacrifice fly to put Cortland ahead 3-2.

The Red Dragons added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Mistretta led off with a single and Graczyk sacrificed him to second. Adornetto walked and Rosing drove in a run with a single to right. Adornetto went to third on the play and scored on Rinaldi's fielder's choice to second.

Brandon McClain (Coram/Longwood) pitched the first seven innings and earned the win when Cortland took the lead for good in the top of the eighth. He allowed four hits, struck out seven and did not walk anyone. Tyler Scott (New Paltz), Cortland's second reliever, pitched two hitless innings for his third save. He fanned three and walked one. Oswego did bring the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth after a one-out hit batter and two-out walk, but Scott struck out the hitter to end the game.

Rosing finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and Adornetto went 1-for-2 with a walk and hit-by-pitch. Chris Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) reached base three times on two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

For Oswego (13-12, 6-6 SUNYAC), Liner was 2-for-3 with a walk. Thor Miller allowed only four hits and one run over six and a third innings and took a no-decision.

Cortland will host Oneonta Friday at 3 p.m. for a single game and a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
