Red Dragons Win Eight Events, Prendergast Sets School Hammer Mark at Home Classic

Tyler Prendergast set a school record in the hammer throw with his distance of 171 feet, 6 inches
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's men won eight events and recorded 10 ECAC qualifying performances at the two-day Cortland Track and Field Classic. There was no team scoring at the event.

One of the ECAC performances was also a school record as junior Tyler Prendergast (Waterford/Shenendehowa) finished second in the hammer throw with a distance of 52.27 meters (171' 6”). The previous school mark was 50.28 meters (164' 11”) by Marcus Matyas in 2006.

Junior Melique Garcia (Watervliet) won the 100-meter dash in 11.43 seconds. His preliminary time of 10.73 seconds is an ECAC qualifier and currently ranks 12th nationally in Div. III. Garcia also finished second in the 200-meter dash in 23.19 seconds behind teammate Stephan Linton (Roosevelt), who won with a time of 23.03 seconds.

Senior Eric Banks (Westbury) won the 400-meter dash in 49.92 seconds, an ECAC qualifier. Linton finished second (50.26) and freshman Jerel Williams (East Islip) was fourth (50.70).

Junior P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) won the triple jump with an ECAC distance of 14.26 meters (46. 9.5”). That performance ranks 10th nationally in Div. III this spring. Freshman Andre Green (Philadelphia/Indian River) was second overall and the top collegiate finisher in the long jump at 7.00 meters (22' 11.75”). That effort is an ECAC qualifier and ranks 17th nationally.

Junior Cody Amengual (West Babylon) won the 1,500 meters in a field of 44 entries in 4:02.35. He was also the top collegiate finisher (third overall) in the 800 meters in 1:56.66. Senior Pat Fannon (West Islip) finished third in the 1,500 meters (4:04.41).

Freshman Keewan Rondinello (Liverpool) won the 400-meter hurdles (56.99), followed by sophomore Rob Schenke (Kings Park) in second (57.01) and freshman Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) in fifth (58.98).

Cortland's other two wins came in relays. Fannon, sophomore Tim Odin (Northport), freshman Julio Melendez (Valley Cottage/Nyack) and Amengual won the 4x800-meter relay in an ECAC time of 8:04.78. Banks, Williams, Rondinello and Linton won the 4x400-meter relay (3:27.92), while freshman Darrius Samples (Islandia/Hauppauge), Green, junior Steven Damiani (West Islip) and Garcia finished second in the 4x100-meter relay with an ECAC time of 43.50 seconds.

Sophomore Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and senior Rob Brower (Massapequa) each cleared an ECAC-qualifying height of 4.65 meters (15' 3”) to tie for third place in the pole vault. Sophomore Nick Avossa (Kingston) posted an ECAC time of 15.40 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries.

Senior Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) finished third in the discus (41.90 meters – 137' 6”) and fifth in the javelin (44.73 meters – 146' 9”). Sophomore Zach Zieniewicz (Seaford) was third in the 110-meter hurdles finals (16.08, 15.99 in prelims) and sophomore Tom Milian (East Meadow) finished fifth (16.62, 16.37 in prelims).

Sophomore Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished third in the 5,000 meters (15:36.44) and sophomore Woody Millar (Saratoga Springs) placed third in the javelin (45.77 meters – 150' 2”). Prendergast was fourth in the discus (41.80 meters – 137' 2”), sophomore Jon Granger (Ticonderoga) finished fourth in the long jump (6.54 meters – 21' 5.5”), senior Justin Torres (Rome/Rome Free Academy) placed fourth in the shot put (13.72 meters – 45' 0.25”) and freshman Jimmy Moyer (Oneida) finished fifth in the decathlon (5,205 points).
