Cortland Routs Oneonta Twice on Senior Day

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland hit a combined five home runs, including one in each game by Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta), as the Red Dragons celebrated Senior Day by sweeping visiting Oneonta. Cortland won the opener in five innings, 12-0, and the second game in six innings, 9-1. Both games were called due to the eight-run rule.

Cortland (16-12, 9-3 SUNYAC) will host New Paltz in a makeup doubleheader Sunday at noon. Oneonta drops to 8-20 overall and 4-10 in the SUNYAC with the losses.

Game 1: Cortland 12, Oneonta 0 (5 inn.) (Box Score)

Cortland scored six runs in both the first and third innings on its way to the convincing victory. Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) led off the bottom of the first with a homer, followed two batters later by a Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) RBI single. After a walk and a pop-out, Wolstenholme blasted a three-run homer to put Cortland up 6-0.

The Red Dragons' six-run third was highlighted by senior Tara Donnino's (East Northport/Northport) grand slam and Wolstenholme's two-run double.  Wolstenholme finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. Donnino was 2-for-4 with four RBI, Cork went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs and Briana Barca (Eastchester) was 2-for-2 with two runs.

Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) tossed four innings for the win. She allowed three hits and no walks and struck out four. Tiffany Sampere (Liverpool) gave up just one walk in a scoreless fifth inning.

Stephanie Gaska doubled in her lone plate appearance and Jamie Whittam finished 1-for-2 with a double for Oneonta.

Following the first game, Cortland honored its five seniors – Meola, Donnino, Cassie Kardias (Shrub Oak/Lakeland), Nicole Gallo (Mount Sinai) and Emily Woudenberg (Ilion).

Game 2: Cortland 9, Oneonta 1 (6 inn.) (Box Score)

Oneonta grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Whittam led off with a double, was bunted to third by Kayln Deso and scored on a Gaska RBI single. Cortland, however, scored four runs in the bottom of the second on a Barca RBI single, a Cork sacrifice fly and a Meola two-run single.

Wolstenholme singled home a run and Barca hit a two-run homer in a three-run third inning for the hosts. Wolstenholme added a solo homer in the fifth, and Kardias ended the game in the sixth when her RBI single created Cortland's eight-run winning margin.

Wolstenholme finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and was a combined 4-for-6 with two homers, a double, seven RBI and four runs scored in the doubleheader. Meola finished the second game 2-for-3 wit a walk and two RBI and Kardias was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Barca drove in three runs and scored twice..
