#1 Cortland Clinches SUNYAC Regular-Season Title with 15-5 Win vs. Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Twelve different players scored at least one goal as the nationally top-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team defeated Oswego, 15-5, Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference and clinched the SUNYAC regular-season title. Cortland has one game remaining at home versus Potsdam on Saturday, and has already defeated second-place Plattsburgh to hold the tiebreaker should the two teams tie in the standings. The Lakers fell to 7-7 and 2-4 with the loss.

Junior Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) was one of three Red Dragons to score two goals in the game as he surpassed 100 points in his career with his score just 23 seconds into the contest. Junior Tyler Chin (Hauppauge) and sophomore Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) also tallied a pair of goals. Freshmen Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) and James Stavrakis (Hillsborough, NJ) each recorded one goal and one assist, while seven other players netted one goal each, including freshman McLaren Brady (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) who scored the first of his career.

Junior goalie Steve Mahle (Camillus/West Genesee) earned the start and stopped 10 shots for Cortland. Junior J.T. Foltz (Auburn) registered three caused turnovers, while Chin added a game-high six ground balls and Hopps and sophomore Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) each had four.

Sophomore Jimmy Cordon (Camillus/West Genesee) and freshman Troy Crevier (Webster/Webster Thomas) led Oswego with two goals apiece. Senior Casey Balzer (Nassau/Hudson Valley CC) contributed one goal and one assist, sophomore Cody Hoose (Syracuse/West Genesee) had two assists and junior Nick Giampaolo (Setauket/Bryant University) chipped in with one assist.

Junior goalie Bryan Martin (Saint James/Smithtown East) registered 13 saves. Crevier won 11-of-20 faceoffs, while sophomore Ron Mckay (Waterford/Shenendehowa) was successful on his three face-off attempts. Giampaolo recorded five ground balls to lead the Lakers.

The Red Dragons opened up a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as Consul netted both of his goals during the 15 minutes, The lead grew to 9-0 at the four minute, 45 second mark of the second quarter before Crevier put the Lakers on the scoreboard at 3:47. Cantelli capped the first-half scoring with his second of the game 1:15 before the half and Cortland led, 10-1.

In the third quarter, Cordon sandwiched a pair of goals around a score by Cortland senior Taylor Mendoza (Greensboro, NC/Western Guilford) to make it an 11-3 game, but Rakoczy closed the quarter with a man-up goal for a 12-3 Cortland lead. The Red Dragons tallied the first three goals of the fourth quarter to push their advantage to 15-3 before Balzer and Crevier finished the scoring with goals in the final 32 seconds.
