Garcia, Flynn Among Top Red Dragon Performers at Cornell Big Red Invitational

P.J. Flynn's triple jump of 47 feet, 1.5 inches currently ranks 12th nationally in Div. III
ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Melique Garcia (Watervliet) won the 100-meter dash and finished second in the 200-meter dash with two of Cortland's 14 ECAC-qualifying performances at the Cornell University Men's Outdoor Track and Field Big Red Invitational.

The meet was Cortland's final competition prior to next weekend's SUNYAC Championships, which Cortland is hosting on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4. The meet will start Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. The Red Dragons are the defending league champion.

Garcia finished first out of 45 sprinters in the 100 meters in 10.73 seconds and was second of 36 in the 200 meters in 21.94 seconds.

Junior P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 14.36 meters (47' 1.5”) that is an ECAC qualifier and currently ranks 12th nationally in Div. III. Three Red Dragons posted ECAC-qualifying times in the 400-meter dash. Junior Stephan Linton (Roosevelt) finished second of 36 in 48.63 seconds, senior Eric Banks (Westbury) was third in 48.65 seconds and freshman Jerel Williams (East Islip) placed eighth in 50.08 seconds. Linton's time ranks 18th and Banks' time is 20th nationally in Div. III.

Sophomore Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) hit an ECAC time with his third-place effort of 9:34.63 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the pole vault, senior Rob Brower (Massapequa) finished third at 4.50 meters (14' 9”) and sophomore Connor Ten Eyck (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tied for fourth at 4.35 meters (14' 3.25”), both ECAC heights.

Two Red Dragons met ECAC standards in the long jump. Freshman Andre Green (Philadelphia/Indian River) finished 10th at 6.97 meters (22' 10.5”) and sophomore Jon Granger (Ticonderoga) was 12th at 6.77 meters (22' 2.5”). Sophomore Nick Avossa (Kingston) finished 14th of 32 in the 110-meter hurdles with an ECAC time of 15.39 seconds.

Cortland also qualified for ECACs in two relays, both of which finished in third place. The 4x100-meter relay of freshman Darrius Samples (Islandia/Hauppauge), Green, junior Steven Damiani (West Islip) and Garcia finished in 42.27 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay of Banks, Williams, freshman Keewan Rondinello (Liverpool) and Linton was clocked at 3:18.36.
