Cortland Loses at Ithaca in Regular-Season Finale

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland, ranked sixth nationally in Div. III, completed its regular-season schedule with a 14-2 non-league loss at 18th-ranked Ithaca College. The Red Dragons, who will host the SUNYAC tournament May 3-5, are now 31-9 on the season. The Bombers improved to 31-6.

Corey Casell hit a grand slam and finished with six RBI and Tim Locastro went 4-for-4 with four runs scored for Ithaca. Matt Connolly was 3-for-5 as the Bombers ended with 14 hits. Pat Lemmo improved to 8-0 with the victory as he gave up two runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Senior John Adornetto (Commack) led Cortland with a 3-for-4 effort that featured a triple and a double. Junior P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, CT) was 2-for-3 with a walk. Senior John Molloy (Franklin Square/Carey), the first of five Cortland pitchers, took the loss after giving up four hits, two walks and five runs, four earned, in one-plus innings.

Ithaca scored three times in the first on a wild pitch and RBI singles by Vinny Gneo and Connolly. The Bombers added three more in the second on a Locastro RBI double, a Caswell RBI groundout and a passed ball.

Caswell also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, then broke the game open when his grand slam capped Ithaca's six-run fifth.

Cortland got on the board in the sixth when Adornetto led off with a triple and scored on a Zack Graczyk (Carmel) RBI single. Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) drove in a run with a groundout in the eighth.
