CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Brockport, 7-4, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. The Golden Eagles, however, rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning of the nightcap and eventually defeated the nationally top-ranked Red Dragons, 10-8 in 11 innings. Cortland is now 18-7 overall and 7-3 in the league, while Brockport is 12-10 and 3-7.
Game 1: Cortland 7, Brockport 4 (Box Score)
Brockport grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on consecutive bases-loaded walks to Dan Hurlimann, Wesley Burghardt and Mike Gianni. Cortland reliever
Zachary Badanes (Syosset) issued the third of those walks, but settled down to allow only one run in five innings for the victory in the seven-inning contest. He struck out four and walked two.
Cortland scored on an error in the bottom of the first, then took the lead with a four-run second inning that featured a
John Adornetto (Commack) two-run single, a
Zack Graczyk (Carmel) RBI groundout and a
Chris Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) RBI infield single.
The Red Dragons added two more runs in the third on
Ralph Keppler's (Rockville Centre/Oceanside) sacrifice fly and
Bryan Mistretta's (Commack) RBI single. Brockport scored in the sixth on a double steal of second and home by Burghardt and Gianni, respectively, and had runners on first and second with two outs.
Steven Kimmelman (Riverhead) entered the game for the Red Dragons and recorded a groundout to end the inning. He gave up a one-out single in the seventh before getting the next batter to ground into a double play to earn his first save of the season.
P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, CT) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Adornetto finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs for Cortland. Nick Bunce finished 3-for-4 and Kyle Tracy was 2-for-4 for Brockport.
Game 2: Brockport 10, Cortland 8 (11 inn.) (Box Score)
Cortland led 6-4 entering the top of the ninth before the Golden Eagles rallied to score three times for the lead. Pinch hitter Bradley Westling singled home the tying runs with one out and, two batters later, Gianni hit an RBI single to put Brockport up 7-6.
Cortland, however, rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth on
Tim Panetta's (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) two-out RBI single.
Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) had singled with one out and pinch runner
Conrad Ziemendorf (Penfield/Webster Schroeder) stole second with two outs to set up Panetta's game-tying hit. The Red Dragons proceeded to load the bases on an error and a walk, but a groundout sent the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, Brockport scored when Jamie Boronczyk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. Cortland, however, rallied again when Graczyk singled, was bunted to second and scored on pinch hitter
Bryan Marotta's (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) single to center.
Brockport scored its winning runs in the 11th on a Jake Coleman two-out RBI infield single and a Pete Wilson RBI single. Travis Renwick, who started for Brockport on Friday versus Cortland, earned the win with two innings of two-hit relief. He struck out two and walked none.
Cortland out-hit Brockport by an 18-15 count. Rosing went 3-for-5 and Panetta was 3-for-4 with a homer, double and two RBI.
Donny Castaldo (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) went 2-for-5 with three RBI, Jackson was 2-for-5 with a homer, Graczyk went 2-for-5 with two runs and Adornetto ended 2-for-5 with a walk.
For Brockport, Tracy finished 3-for-6 and Coleman went 3-for-7. Shawn Peake homered and finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI and Colin Grande was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Cortland will host Ithaca in a non-league game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
