CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) threw a three-hitter as Cortland defeated Buffalo State, 3-1, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. The Red Dragons (10-10, 4-2 SUNYAC) completed the sweep by rallying from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Bengals in the second game, 6-5.
Game 1: Cortland 3, Buffalo St. 1 (Box Score)
Corrigan improved to 4-1 with the victory. She struck out three and walked one.
Alicia Hibbard (Canastota) reached base in all three of her plate appearances with an RBI double and two walks.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the first when Hibbard hit a two-out RBI double off the top of the fence in left center. Buffalo State tied the game in the third on a Stephanie Novo solo homer, but the Red Dragons re-gained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Corrigan led off with a bunt single and took second on a throwing error on the play.
Cortland eventually loaded the bases on a
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) fielder's choice and a
Lucia Meola (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) walk, then took the lead on Hibbard's walk that forced in Corrigan. Two batters later,
Cassie Kardias (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) walked for bring home Bucci.
Corrigan allowed only two runners over the last four innings on a Lindsay Goff walk in the fifth and a Sam Strapason infield single in the sixth. Maddie Coneys pitched a complete game for Buffalo State and allowed four hits, four walks and three runs – one earned – in six innings.
Game 2: Cortland 6, Buffalo St. 5 (Box Score)
Tiffany Sampere (Liverpool) entered in relief in the third and pitched the final five innings for the victory. She allowed six hits and one walk, struck out three and was charged with three runs, two earned. Hibbard and Kardias each finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Cortland led 1-0 after a Hibbard RBI single in the first, but Buffalo State scored twice in the second on a wild pitch and a Novo RBI double. The Bengals added two more in the third. Jordan Dudish singled in a run, and scored after an error on a single by Shelly Maggard.
The Red Dragons scored once in the third on Meola's sacrifice fly and another in the fourth when Kardias led off with a triple and scored on a one-out
Courtney Kadish (Williamsville/Williamsville North) groundout.
In the fifth,
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) led off with a single, was bunted to second by Bucci, took third on a Meola single and scored on Hibbard's single down the right-field line. Kardias followed with a two-run single to center to give Cortland a 6-4 lead.
Buffalo State tightened things in the seventh. With one out, Novo walked and Goff singled. One out later, Breanna Fenski singled to center to score Novo. With runners on second and third, Sampere got the next batter to ground out to short to end the game.
Cortland will host Ithaca College in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday, April 9, at 3 p.m.
