La CROSSE, WIS. - Cortland junior
Cody Amengual (West Babylon) earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the final day of the NCAA Div. III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet was held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Amengual finished the race in 9:07.36, just edging the seventh-place runner by less than four tenths of a second. Michael LeDuc of Connecticut College on the title in 8:50.58, just eight hundredths of a second faster than the runner-up.
Amengual was in third place about three minutes into the race, then dropped into fourth place over the next two minutes. He was in sixth place with two laps remaining and was able to hold on to that spot. The top eight finishers in each event are All-Americans.
Cortland finished with three team points due to Amengual's finish and tied for 61st place in the final team standings. The host school won the title with 66 points, followed by Wisconsin-Eau Claire with 64 points. A total of 79 schools scored points at the meet.
