Final Relay Decisive as Cortland Men Win Second Straight SUNYAC Outdoor Title

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's outdoor track and field team earned the decisive points by winning the meet's final event, the 4x400-meter relay, to narrowly claim its second straight SUNYAC title and 12th overall at the league's championship meet Friday and Saturday at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.

Cortland scored 10 points in the relay as senior Eric Banks (Westbury), freshman Jerel Williams (East Islip), freshman Keewan Rondinello (Liverpool) and junior Stephan Linton (Roosevelt) finished in 3:15.67. Oneonta placed second for eight points. Cortland won the team title with 200 points, with Oneonta second at 198 points and Buffalo State third with 110 points. Completing the field were Brockport (89.5), Geneseo (79.5), Fredonia (68), Plattsburgh (45) and Oswego (28).

Freshman Andre Green (Philadelphia/Indian River) won the long jump at 7.30 meters (23' 11.5”), missing a school record by less than two inches.  Senior Tom Hopkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) was the SUNYAC 5,000-meter run champion in 15:05.86.

The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference.

Linton finished second in the 400-meter dash in 48.20 seconds. Junior Melique Garcia (Watervliet) was second in the 100-meter dash (10.89, 10.78 in prelims) and junior P.J. Flynn (Valhalla) finished second in the high jump at 1.93 meters (6' 4”). Cortland also earned a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay as freshman Darrius Samples (Islandia/Hauppauge), Green, junior Steven Damiani (West Islip) and Garcia finished in 42.24 seconds.

Garcia tied for sixth place among individual track scorers at the meet with 15 points and Linton was eighth with 13.5 points. Flynn tied for fourth in field scoring at 14 points.

Cortland will compete at the ECAC Div. III Outdoor Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 16-17, at Springfield College.
