Cortland Women Dominate Competition to Win Third Straight SUNYAC Championship

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's outdoor track and field team won its third straight SUNYAC title and its 16th overall at the league's championship meet Friday and Saturday at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.

Cortland convincingly won the meet with 244 points. Buffalo State finished second with 129 points and Brockport was third with 116 points. Rounding out the field were Geneseo (103.5), Plattsburgh (71), Oneonta (67), Fredonia (49.5) and Oswego (37).

Five Cortland individuals won league titles, three with meet records. Junior Sarah Bonnell (Norwich) won the long jump with a meet record leap of 5.69 meters (18' 8”). Sophomore Taylor Hudson (Victor) broke the meet record in the high jump at 1.67 meters (5' 5.75”) and senior Nikki Schafer (Troy/Columbia) established a new meet record in the heptathlon with her winning score of 4,524 points.

Junior Africa Harper (Bronx/John F. Kennedy) won the 400-meter dash in 56.81 seconds (56.80 in prelims) and senior Amber Stephens (Stony Point/North Rockland) won the triple jump at 11.51 meters (37' 9.25”). Cortland also won the 4x400-meter relay as Harper, senior Alexis Grable (Pine Bush), senior Caitlin Triantafillou (Getzville/Williamsville North) and senior Abby Vander Veen (Duanesburg/Faith Bible Academy) were clocked at 3:53.48.

The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference. Earning second-team honors with runner-up showings were Triantafillou in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.09), junior Dayna Eikeseth (Staten Island/Tottenville) in the 5,000 meters (18:11.18), senior Christi Nassauer (Mount Sinai) in the pole vault (3.40 meters – 11' 1.75”), sophomore Valerie Vancol (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) in the shot put (11.74 meters – 38' 6.25”) and junior Alexandra Budd (Riverhead) in the high jump (1.53 meters – 5' 0.25”).

Harper finished as the third-leading individual track scorer at the meet with 18.5 points. Stephens was the third-best field scorer with 16 points and Hudson was fourth in field scoring at 15 points.

Cortland will compete at the ECAC Div. III Outdoor Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 16-17, at Springfield College.
